I take it that you have hypothyroidism. This is where the gland becomes underactive, most commonly due to antibodies that have developed against the thyroid. When your doctor says that it has stopped working that it is no longer able to produce thyroxine on its own because the antibodies have damaged its cells. This is what happens in hypothyroidism of this nature. Don't worry, the medication is replacing the thyroxine that your thyroid no longer produces. You also shouln't have to worry about surgery unless you have a goitre (this is like a lump in the neck). I know its difficult to take all this stuff in when you have have recently been diagnosed, i felt the same. How are you feeling?
