What thyroid tests are being done to assess your status? If you are not being tested for the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4, then you should request those and if the doctor resists, you should insist on them. If you have been tested for those, please post results and ranges shown on the lab report.
Free T3 is the most important because it largely regulates metabolism and many other body functions. Scientific studies have shown that Free T3 correlated with hypo symptoms best, while Free T4 and TSH did not correlate at all.
So Free T3 and Free T4 will give the best picture of your thyroid status. Due to the cause for your weight gain, you should be able to lose some of the weight by getting your Free T3 to the right level for you. After that it may be necessary to work on diet and exercise to get where you want to be. But making sure your Free T3/metabolism are right should be the first step.
i am taking Tapazole. i was taking 3 pills a day and gained an additional 8 pound(at 5'2,it really shows)
now i'm down to 1 1/2 pill a day..my doctor said it should stabalise my weight gain, but had no response as to how to loose the 18 i gained...
Although weight gain can be related to a number of possible causes, being hypothyroid is certainly one of them. How are you being treated for the Grave's? Are you taking medication for it? If so, what type and what dosage? Please post your thyroid related test results and their reference ranges so that members can try to assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment.
