Weight gain can be experienced during periods of thyroid imbalance, whether it be hypo or hyper.
The rule of thumb is that hypothyroidism can contribute to weight gain, but it is a rule that is broken all the time.
Some people lose weight when hyper or gain weight when hypo. Some people experience the opposite. Some people don't experience loss or gain.
I did not gain weight when I was hypo, but I lost weight when I was hyper. Each person has their own experience when it comes to weight issues.
The Cytomel has increased your metabolism, so you are hungry more frequently. Why you are not burning off the calories is a puzzle.
You need to see a different doctor.
Your Cytomel to Levothyroxine ratio is ridiculously high. The doctor should know that. Cytomel is 2 1/2 times as potent as Levothyroxine. By adding Cytomel your doctor more than doubled your medication in one step.
A normal combination would be 75mcg of Levo and 5mg of Cytomel, or something like that ratio-wise. Maybe 88mcg of Levo and 10mg of Cytomel, or 100mcg and 10mg.
One part Cytomel and two parts Levothyroxine is not a good balance. The Cytomel is metabolized very quickly and is gone in a few hours. So you are getting overmedicated half the day, and undermedicated half the day. You're going up and down like a yoyo every day, and the chances are pretty good your bloodwork will show you are hyper.
if it was causing hyperthyroid.would i start loosing weight because I'm gaining it bad?
thank you that's how it went with the first heart med he gave me he started me out on a 50 mg dose and my grandmother is on the same dose after slowly going up over 5 years and i had the worst reaction to it that i took myself off because i could not take it,
thank you for your advice
I agree with AR....it sounds like the cytomel is making you hyperthyroid. That is an extremely large amount of T3 med to start you on...wow!
I would find another doctor right away....if the meds are making you hyper, then that can cause high pulse, heart issues, etc. Ask for a referral to an endo. Hope you feel better soon!
The cytomel you are taking is probably too high a dose compared to your levothyroxine.
Get a second opinion, and get copies of your tests. Your doctor sounds a little iffy.
