All TTCers with MTHFR disorder

I've heard that u must use 4000 or higher dosage of Folic acid when u have MTHFR...

My question is that does ur prenatal vitamins contain 4000 mg of Folic acid ..if so what brand are u taking...

or do u take additional over the counter folic acid to meet the desired level of folic acid...?

thanks

I know I am coming to this kind of late, but I take a vitamin called Prenate DHA.  I take it all the time whether ttcing or not because it has metafolate and DHA in it.  There is a generic out now, but it doesn't have the metafolate, just regular folic acid.  The metafolate is easier for us ladies with MTHFR to absorb.  I like it a lot.  I would be interested to know if there are any forums for ttcing with thrombophilia.  Thanks!

Anyone wishing information regarding MTHFR, I invite you to visit the new Group Forum MTHFR.

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/MTHFR-Methylenetetrahydrofolate-reductase/show/961

There you will find a lot of helpful information and resources along with other womens accounts of their journey with MTHFR.

I hope that if anyone is wondering about MTHFR or is dealing with MTHFR that they will visit and or share their story with everyone.  Everyone's body may deal with MTHFR differently but since there is so much debate surrounding MTHFR, treatments may be different.  Ideally taking 200% more Folic Acid (5mg as opposed to 0.4mg) is the standard recommended treatment.  Other's will elevate the treatment depending on the problems that MTHFR has caused, such as Low Dose baby aspirin, Extra vitamin B6 &12, and also a low weight molecular blood thinner such as Lovenox/Heparin.

Regardless, your doctor's advice is usually best but it never hurts to bring them additional information in case they are not well versed on the MTHFR mutation as many are not.

Good luck and hope to see you in the new Group Forum - http://www.medhelp.org/forums/MTHFR-Methylenetetrahydrofolate-reductase/show/961

In addition to anything I have mentioned, please keep in mind, that while I or others may have extensive knowledge in many areas, you should always seek professional medical advice from your own physician, as it pertains to medical conditions or concerns.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please feel free to message me directly.

Sincerely,

What is MTHFR?
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is the name of a gene that produces an enzyme, also called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. If a person carries the genetic mutation that inhibits production of this enzyme, it can result in hyperhomocytenemia, which is an elevated level of an enzyme called homocysteine found in blood plasma.

I have 2 mutations of the A1298C gene, and I have to take 2 Folgards per day.  Each one contains like 2.2mg of Folic Acid along with the necessary amounts of the B vitamins.  I have been told that per mutation, you need one folgard.  So, since I have 2 mutations, I take 2.  I take this in addition to my prenatals.

I'm not sure how much is in a prenatal but it's probably not enough for a woman with MTHFR. To get extra Folic acid you should eat eggs, dark leafy vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli, oranges and orange juice and legumes, peas and dried beans. Talk to your doctor and see what would be best for you!
