Bad chills and high fevers

My husbad suffers from recurrent attacks that come on suddenly out of the blue. His legs start to ache and a short time later he gets very very cold, shakes uncontrolably and turns a blue colour. We put him to bed as soon as this happens and pile on the blankets and turn on the electric blanket. About 2 hours later it is the opposite. Off comes all the bedding and he has a very high temperature and sweats profusely for about another 2 hours.
He then returns to a normal temperature but is very weak and drained for a few days after.
Sometimes he breaks out in cold sores on his lips and chin.
When mentioned to the Dr he just gets told it is probably a virus.
These attacks started over 2 years ago and are getting more regular and closer together.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone about this.

I know this was back in 2006 but I've only just discovered it.
I was looking for chronic high fevers and chills - the doctors here call them "rigors" where my daughter shakes and shakes until a high fever comes on -this can be 2 or 3 times a day- usually worst one at night.I wanted to reply because you mention cold sores and my daughter was diagnosed with disseminated herpes- the virus got in her bloodstream and into her liver and her whole body swelled up.She has been on valaciclovir(valtrex) for 6 months now but is still getting these awful fevers and is very weak and depressed most of the time

Hi - I was going to mention this once we were communicating by email but my husband has also had a MRI and a ultrasound a few months back due to his having blood in his urine.
Now this might be totally separate and I do not want to cause any false anxiety but it turned out that he had a tumour on his kidney and has recently had his whole kidney removed.
I checked out all I could find about kidney cancer and it mentioned chills and fevers were part of the symptons.
We were hoping that once the kidney had been removed the chill/fever scenario would disappear but alas - no.
After my husbands last attack he did break out in a lot of cold sores which are part of a virus.
We are now waiting to see if he has any more of these attacks.
I will do the temperature taking etc as already mentioned and will report back in due course.
Do keep in touch over this as there has to be a "cause."

Ok, I am working on it.
My father just went for an MRI and ultrasound today.  They still haven't found anything but the doctor precribed an antibotic to him during this past episode and it seemed to control it a bit.  Maybe it is virus related?

Actually, we have been doing the same this past weekend, documenting the fever temperatures.  They have a dr. appointment later this week.  This espisode lasted 9 days and was the worst attack yet.  I would like to keep in touch via personal email.  I think it would be more convienient.  Do you agree?

Next time my husband has one of these turns I intend to record his temperature at the start of the shaking and again when he is at his hottest with the fever.
I then intend to write a full report for the Dr to read and have a serious think about. There is a cause for this and we need to know what it is.
May I suggest that you do the same and let us each report back with any further findings.

Same here.  He has been through numerous tests but they cannot find anything.  They all want to focus on the current issue but no one wants to take into consideration that it is reoccurring!!

My father is suffering almost the same exact symptons.  Is there anything that your doctor did tell you about this?
