If there are 1 or 2 leukocytes then I believe it is normal, but I was told by a doctor at a lab that any more than 7 should be further investigated as there could be an infection - these infections need clearing up asap!!. Did your urinalysis show any nitrates?? as that is a sign too of uti. If I were you, take your results to your doctor and get a professional opinion and he may prescribe you antibiotics - get him to do a urine strip analysis to put your mind at rest. Hope all is ok.
As a lab tech myself (I see hundreds of ua's). When I see trace on the leukocytes, the first thing I usually think is that it was not a clean catch. Believe it or not, urine is actually a sterile body fluid. It is only as it leaves your body that it gets exposed to elements that can show up in a urinalysis. Leukocytes are another name for white blood cells. When these are present either with or without the nitrates, it can indicate an infection. Your body naturally sends these white blood cells to counter the bacteria growing in the sterile environment of your body. If left untreated one could be in for a painful UTI. If you are sure it was a clean catch specimen, then a microscopic examination is in order to see just how many wbc's are present and if any bacteria are present. This can be the first sign of an infection. Drink LOTS of water -or other fluids -stay away from caffeine and other carbonated drinks. Drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry pills can help support the urinary system too. Take care of yourself, UTI's hurt.
