HI.  Probably is asthma or some sort of respiritory disease.  Doubt very much that it is anything serious.  A fantastic solution for breathing problems is a breathing technique called 'Buteyko'. I used it 5 years ago and the results have been great. Best Wishes.

PonderingWhy,

Hi there. I'm a 26 year old female. I was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 10. A tightness around the chest (almost feels like someone's wrapped a big rubberband around your ribs/chest too tight?), and trouble breathing could fit with asthma. Do you wheeze at all? (Kind of a raspy, whistling noise when you breathe in or out?). Have you done anything differently in the past few weeks, besides quit smoking? (Do you exercise more? Did you get a pet? Wear a winter coat filled with down?)
Usually, emphysema takes a bit longer to develop, so I'm not sure I would worry about that too much. It could even just be that you've developed some allergies, and if you live in an area where the air is cold now, that certainly would not help your breathing. Or, since this has only been going on in the last week or so, it could be bronchitis- it inflames the lining of your lungs/main airways, so you have trouble breathing and cough alot. Usually, it's viral, so antibiotics wouldn't help all that much (just liquids and sleep), but the doctor will be able to tell you whether or not you have it. You may even just have an upper respiratory infection that's treatable with antibiotics. Seeing the doctor in a week is a good idea though; there are many things that it could be. If it does wind up being asthma though, don't worry too much- it is a very manageable disease in adults. Good luck!
