Deadly Symptoms

Hi I'm a 34 year old woman with controlled Hypothyroidism I'm on my synthroid and my levels are healthy and have been for the past 8 years I've been on them. 20 months ago I quit smoking and in that time I have put on over 100lbs my hair has turned in a thick frizzy mess, I have lost fingernails and toe nails,  I have gotten severe acne that even acutane didn't treat, I get this bumpy red rash all over my arms, hands, legs and feet that scars rather badly, 75F weather and I'm freezing and I have chest and abdominal pain a lot. These are the only symptoms I cant link to just being very over weight like the migraines, neck pain, back pain, leg pain, knees and hips dislocating, inability to breath and the feeling of being crushed under my own weight. Also since I have put on the weight I now have very severe sleep apnea about 148 events a hour so I feel tired, achy, dizzy, confused and weepy all the time. I see my doctors regularly I have blood work every 3 months and I've seen 5 different specialist in the past 6 months and they all tell me that they cant find anything wrong with me. I'm 4'9" and 240lbs the circumference of my waist is more inch's then I am tall and I'm being told all my problems are in my head I'm at my wits end I need help.

Wooly hair syndrome and nail changes are with biotin deficiency. Why not get your doc give you a therapeutic trail? At the end of it it is not the nomenclature but the correction made if it is true? It is not always that a diagnosis is arrived with investigations. In fact the old art of clinical diagnosis is lost and buried in the present. We need people like Sir William Osler, the great clinician of yester- years.
Best wishes.

I've put that on my list of things I'm going to ask my doctor about on Friday when I see her. Thank you for the suggestion.

As I stated in the first sentence of my post I do have thyroid disease and have had for nearly that past decade and I do take medication for it 75micrograms of Synthroid, so yes that has been totally ruled out. I've seen 2 different endocrinologists in the past 6 months and both have told me that these new symptoms have nothing to do with my preexisting thyroid condition. Just out of no where I stopped poisoning my body with nicotine and all these symptoms surfaced and no one can figure it out.

Your profile mentions thyroid disease.  Did they rule that out?  It could cause the hair problems and weight problems and cold intolerance at least.

Are you sure you've been tested for Celiac disease or other malabsorption problem?  It can cause the hair and nail problems and 250 other symptoms.  You can have Celiac disease without any digestive symptoms at all.  And docs don't always check people who are overweight, but it happens all the time.

As I have said I have seen my Doctor had every blood test, ultrasound, CT Scan and every other tests under the sun for the past 6 months I've had over night study's and there even booking me to remove my tonsils in hopes that I'll be able to sleep better. I've been poked and prodded by 6 different doctors in the past 6 months my GP and 5 different specialist and so far they say I'm 100% healthy but my symptoms get worse everyday. They have ruled out all the common things I was hoping someone could help with the uncommon.

I find your history absolutely interesting and an answer should be sought here.Your hair and nail symptoms, myalgias, rash, mental symptoms all lead to one possible diagnosis. 'Biotin deficiency'.Extremely rare though, these symptoms prompt me to suggest the same. Do consult your physician.

As a marker of abdominal fat, the hip-to-waist ratio is better than the BMI (Body Mass Index).

Causes of abdominal fat include:

High insulin
High cortisol
High estrogen
Low testosterone
Low DHEA

To find your waist-to-hip ratio, divide your waist measurement at its narrowest point by your hip measurement at its widest point. Low 0.80; 0.81 to 0.85 moderate; 0.85+ high. If you have a high number, worth requesting the above tests. Causes of deficiency or excess can be due to various medical conditions. Eg: high cortisol can be caused by Cushing's Disease.
