Desperate for help....

I have never had any medical problems before. I was going through a stress full time in September 2011. I began having numbness, tingling, and disorientation. I went to ER and they ran a MRI of my head and spine all came back clear. THey told me I had a panic attack. I left and did not have a problem until around Nov 2013.

I have had some stomach aches and a dull pain on my lower left side of my abdomin for several years that would come and go. I had seen a GP and they told me it was gas not to worryI. Around Nov the pain began to get much worse and I noticed I was having stomach aches and was having indigestion. I drink alcohol a few times a week and would get much sicker after drinking then I did before. So I slowed my drinking down a lot.

My GP gave me some meds to help with the pain but wanted me to see a Gastro. I set an appointment but could not get in to see the dr for over a month. The pain once again went away and I cancelled the appointment.

In January I started having some odd vision problems that would come and go. They were accompinied by head pressure that would not hurt but just made me feel like I needed to pop my ears. I had a little dizziness but not much.We did a MRI just to make sure and it came back clear. My GP thought it was a sinus issue and gave me some antibiotics. The pressure came and went so not sure the antibiotics did much.Eventually it just disappeared. Well the end of January my abdominal pain was back and much worse.

I went to see a Gastro and had a full work up done. CT of stomach and abdominal area. Bloodwork and colonoscopy. All was clear. Report stated that I had slight diverticulitis in the adverse colon. He put me on some meds and told me to change my diet and I would be fine. However, the stomach problems lasted and didnt go away. I tried a high fiber diet. No fried foods or anything fatty. I went to lots of fruits and veggies. Lots of organic and whole grain foods. My stomach pains were still there. I had no energy as well. My GP then put me on some more meds for stomach pains, none seemed to do anything. I went about 3 months with a VERY sensitive stomach. I had given up on the diets and the meds and went back to my normal eating and everything just seemed to start feeling better one day. This was around end of April, beginning of May.

The head pressure the returned. My vision disorientation would come and go but was much worse than before. It wasnt constant but was there probably 70% of the time. I tried the sinus medication my GP had given me and it did nothing. I was extremely tired all the time. I then had chest pain. Felt as though someone was ripping at my chest. My GP sent me to a Cardiologist and had a full work up done. Everything checked out clear. This last with  head pressure and vision problems for a week  or so then I felt this form of electrical jolt through my body. I left work and then began having tingling and numbness in my legs and arms. This was mainly in the right side of my body. It would come and go. I was having painful jolts in my legs and in my back.

I was then sent to a Neuro. He did the basic exams then a EMG test. He then did a MRI of my neck which came out clear. He wanted me to see a Psychitrist. He told me all my symptoms were in my head. I didnt believe him and sought a second opinion.

I saw a different Neuro who told me it sounded like a food allergy. That I should try the gluten free diet. I did and it did not work. My GP then did a celiac disease test that came back negative. At this point I was constantly fatigued and had head pressure, and tingling everyday. I wasnt able to work due to no energy and I could not manage to function on my feet for a long period of time. My GP tried a few medications that my body seemed to reject. They were causing lot of adverse side effects. Mainly me feeling like a zombie or out of body experience. She put me on gabapentin and it didnt cause any side effect but I could not tell if it help or not.

I thought I was getting better. My energy levels had increased. The head pressure seems to be less than what it was. The tingling and numbness had gone away. I thought I was on the right track. I started back to work and made it through a whole week. I then had the worst headache of my life. I had to sleep it off. Pain relievers didnt seem to help. I woke up the next day and felt fine.

About a week later I started having the head pressure again on and off and then I was having sharp pains in my head. Lasted only a second or two. I was also having pain behind my right ear. Sharp pain. This went on for a week and the following week I felt a sharp pain run up my neck to the back of my ear into my temple. THe pain would not go away. I went to the ER. They gave me several pain meds and ran a CAT scan. Said it was just a bad migraine.

This was last week. I saw my neuro who said he believes I was having migraines the whole time. That it is possibly causing a chemical imbalance that is causing my symptoms. He prescribed me imipramine 10mg. He told me that it would take a while to see any difference from the med.

I took the med that night before bed and I didnt sleep. I tossed and turned. I had really odd feelings all night and I had hot and cold flashes. I got up the next day and had hot flashes then electricity feeling up my spine. I then felt a huge jolt to my chest. My chest began to hurt. I just felt off the entire day. I went and saw my GP who told me to try taking it again. The symptoms are some what normal but to let her know if it changes. I took the imipramine again and had the same thing happen. NO sleep and tingling. THen I was having stomach spasms and then my heart felt like it spasmed. My chest and rib area hurt. Felt like my heart beat was off and fast. I called my GP who told me to stop taking the imipramine. I felt drained and my chest hurt for the next four days.

I felt good for 2 days then went to work and then I started having tingling all over my body. My heart started racing. I had head pressure and my vision was off. My nerves were very sensitive to hot and cold. The tingling was a itching type feeling.
My GP and my neuro talked and my neuro wants me to try and stay on the imipramine. I told her I didnt like the side effects and I would not take it anymore.

The drs are calling it complex migraines but they cant say thats exactly right. I dont know what to do. Its effecting my whole life and has been for months. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. However, I was not under any stress as all this started. Never been a stressed out person. I was given xanax and 2 different meds that did nothing but get me high. I do believe that stress can do a whole lot of stuff to your body but I HIGHLY doubt my symptoms are caused by a psychological problem. I am not a doctor but going from very active and healthy to having issues getting off the couch. I have to believe it a little more.

Hi. I'm not going to say that your symptoms can't be psychological or possibly due to stress, but I think that what you're experiencing is serious enough that you might want to keep pushing for answers. I was told that I was having panic attacks and that my symptoms were due to stress even when I made it clear to the doctor that I had not been feeling stressed before the onset of my symptoms. If I just accepted what the doctor said instead of pushing for help, I wouldn't have found out that my optic nerves are swollen and that's what was causing my visual symptoms.

tgent99,
I have to tell you first and foremost I am not a doctor and am still in my first term working towards a bachelors in psychology. A great deal of the time we do not get the answers we want from our physicians because their is still some mystery as to how our bodies and minds behave. In saying that I have to tell you that the psychiatrist that you have seen may have been right. I would like to know do all of these symptoms seem to come on when you have something particularly stressful going on in your life? You would be absolutely amazed at the things I am learning about the signals our brains send out to the rest of our body. I became interested in this because I found out I had fibromyalgia before it was the go to diagnosis for pain in the muscles that had no physiological cause. Thats what prompted me to go into the psychology field. Our mind and our bodies electrical signals are so complex we may never understand 100% how they work. I hope that you will consider further communication with a more personable and caring psychology professional before discounting the idea that it could indeed be " in your head". If indeed it is then there could be a medicine out there that you could take to disrupt those chemicals being released from your body that are telling you your in pain.

Dysautonomia (autonomic dysfunction) comes to mind. I wasn't too sure about the head pressure as a possible symptom but found a blog that mentioned that symptom...

"What I didn’t know was that all through high school I was struggling with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. I assumed I was always tired because I did too much. I was wrong. I thought my teammates all felt as miserable as I did when I ran. They didn’t. I listened to my doctors when they said my constant head pressure and terrible migraines were stress-induced. That’s not what caused them." - POTS - Take Your Life Back.

Medhelp has a list of some of the possible symptoms of dysautonomia although the list of symptoms are far longer than that.
