Ears are ringing...so annoying.

I would describe myself as a healthy 23 year old male. I eat regularly and very healthy.

On Saturday morning at approximately 1:30AM in the morning, I noticed a slight ringing in my right ear. I figured it would just go away eventually, because sometimes my ears will ring randomly from time to time for about 30 to 60 seconds and completely disappear about maybe once or twice a week. I was on Xanax due to anxiety at the time (I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and Xanax makes me feel sleepy, so I was able to go to sleep without a problem, however my ears were still ringing when I went to sleep. I figured I would wake up and it would be gone, no big deal. I had no idea why they had been ringing because I hadn't been doing anything to bring it on.

I woke up about 7:30AM or so, and the ringing wouldn't let me go back to sleep. I kind of started to freak out (understatement), and I consulted with my mother who I live with, and she says I should take another Xanax to help me relax, and help me sleep. So I did, and at about 10:30AM, I finally fell asleep again. Woke up again at 3:30PM. Ringing was still rather persistent.

I read that if you listen to music or have background noise, it distracts you from thinking there is ringing in your ears. So I did that for pretty much the rest of the day and played video games and listening to music, and it was pretty un-noticeable for that time, but the moment I stopped playing the game or stopped the music, my ringing was back. I was up later than usual last night trying to sleep.

I woke up this morning and found that the ringing seems to be even worse and more noticeable than the day before. I'm not sure what to do. I've talked to a pharmacist regarding the Xanax, and he says it would not produce this side effect ESPECIALLY that I'm taking the Xanax in very low dosages (less than 0.25 or 0.5 at a time, and very infrequently), and he recommended that I should be checked at an urgent care clinic or the ER. I don't think that it's an ear infection, and I don't seem to have a wax build-up in my ears. I did have a cold, but that was WEEKS ago.

I'm just not sure if I should go to the ER, or the urgent care clinic, because the urgent care clinic does not have all of the diagnosing materials that the hospital does, and I'm not sure if this is something more serious. Because it's driving me mad.

It amazing when you talk to people with chronic pain or symtoms that never go away and the dozens of doctors you see and never help. Why is that?

If you want me to tell you what you really have let me know.

Hi,

I think I know what is wrong with you. There is a simple test you can go through to see if you feel better and you might feel some pain which is due to healing.

I know many people with the ringing in their ears.

Thanks
Fred

The ringing still persists. It depends on the day. Sometimes it's really loud and really annoying, and others it's hardly noticeable.

Went to a doctor who specializes in ears, nose, and throat. He says it could be just something weird going on with my brain. If the symptoms persist for 2 to 3 months, I should get an MRI and a CT or something to rule out cancer.

Xanax helps alleviate the symptoms somewhat. Put on it twice a day.

It actually tuns out that it might be an ear infection and that I was misdiagnosed AGAIN by the urgent care facility. They didn't even look in my mouth, and when I went to my doctor again after some new symptoms presented, she took a look in my mouth and saw redness in my mouth on the side where I was experiencing the ringing. So she put me on Amoxicillin 3 times a day for 10 days.

I went to urgent care yesterday. The doctor told me that there was no wax build up, that I had no ear infection, and that my ears looked completely normal. I also have no hearing loss, just an annoying ringing.

He then told me it was being caused by a virus, and it will last for 2 weeks. I have been put on Meclizine 4 times a day to make it manageable, however the medication sure makes me feel dumb as all hell. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to think of the ringing. I haven't taken the meds yet this morning and the ringing is very present.

He also then told me if the cause of the ringing were mental or stress related, then both of my ears would be ringing, instead of just my right ear.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
What you have is tinnitus or abnormal sound in ear. There are many medical causes for tinnitus. Besides loud noises, other causes include severe head trauma, sinus and respiratory infections, ear infections, wax build-up, high blood cholesterol, food allergies, certain types of tumors and a long list of other conditions.
Other possible causes of tinnitus have their origin in either your ear (Ménière's disease, otosclerosis, middle ear infections,   wax in your ear canal and TMJ), or auditory nerve (which carries signals from your inner ear to your brain like acoustic neuroma), and side-effects of medicines (aspirin, quinine, some antibiotics etc). Tinnitus can also be stress related.
Sometimes it can be a pulsatile tinnitus where you hear your own pulse. The most common cause of pulsatile tinnitus is noisy blood flow as blood pushes through plaques or kinks in the arteries in the head or neck. It can be made worse if there is also hypertension. Increased blood flow as seen in anemia and hyperthyroid state can also cause pulsatile tinnitus. Fluid in middle ear can be another cause. Vascualr tumors of middle ear such as glomus tumors or paragangliomas can also cause this.
Please consult an ENT specialist. Hope this helps. Take care!
