Food Poisoning?

I went to dinner on Monday night and was fine but after dinner I started feeling a little bit sick.  A few hours after going to bed it got worse, I woke with cramps, nausea and diarrhoea.  I couldn't even keep water down that night and the next morning I wiped bright red blood after another bout of diarrhoea.  My head feels warm but my body feels cold (my temp is only 36.3 however) and I keep getting dizzy spells.  Although the diarrhoe and vomit are no longer an issue my stomach still feels sore and sick  and I have absolutely no urge to eat or drink.  Could this be food poisoning and if so have I left it too late to go to my doctor?

As Londres70 stated, the problems are generally self-limiting.

Doctornee suggested an antibiotic.

Instead of an antibiotic, a bactricidal agent such as Pepto-Bismal might have been easier for you to use. Bactricidal agents kill bacteria on  contact. The agent in Pepto-Bismal is the element bismuth. There are better things to use, but this is the most inexpensive.

After the bacteria is killed then the gut should be repopulated with Lactobacillus and yoghurt.

Probably, at this stage, the intestine has cleansed itself.

Drink plenty of fluids, and eat some roughage with your meals to scour your intestines.

As doctornee stated, things will probably soon quiet down.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Take an OTC lactobacillus preparation and yoghurt with your meals. Drink plenty of fluids. Eat light, do not stay hungry but eat simple things like toast, porridge, cereals, crackers etc. Take ORS. Take over the counter antacid and antiemetic (this SOS for vomiting). Watch out for a day or two with this treatment. If still the symptoms persist, then you may need an antibiotic for the gut and would need to see a doctor. If after the antibiotic course too the symptoms persist, then there is a chance that you have developed either IBS or some food intolerance. In that case you would need to consult a gastroenterologist.
Please go through as advised. In all probability things will settle down. At any time you feel that symptoms are worsening (more than 8-10 loose stools in 24 hrs, vomiting, feeling faint, high fever etc) please go to the ER.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Sounds suspicious of food poisoning.  If it resolves on it own, I don't think it is necessary to go seek medical attention.  Sounds like it is resolving to me.

Just build your diet and activity up slowly; I wouldn't be eating ANYTHING heavy and/or doing ANYTHING strenuous.

All the best.  :)
