Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
“Experts think that migraines are caused by the expansion of blood vessels serving the brain, and that this expansion is triggered by a decline in the level of serotonin, one of the brain's chief chemical messengers. Frova works by restoring serotonin levels to normal. It belongs to a class of drugs called "serotonin agonists."
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

which hormone is the cause of vertigo...anyone know??? I have been having hormonal migraines which are being treated well with Frova. But now I am dizzy from time to time..I am.at the beginning of menapause.
Another update. Just had my first vertigo attack in 16 months, and it was shorter than the old attacks used to be. I still swear by my HRT helping me avoid these, but I won't know unless I go off of the estridiol, and i'm not doing that!
Just an update on my vertigo - I'm going 10 months and virtigo free. I went on HRT because of symptoms after a complete hysterectomy, and haven't had a vertigo attack since. (Estradiol very small dose). I know the literature says that it probably isn't related (well 50% says it might help, 50% say there is no way it would help), but empirical evidence is that where my vertigo attacks were getting more and more frequent, now they've stopped.
My vertigo is an abrupt change in the direction of "up", such that i immediately fall. I can't walk, can't turn, can't tell which direction is what. Pretty debilitating. I had my first attack 2 years ago, one a year later, and then 5-7 attacks in the last four months. At first i was told benign postural vertigo, and one attack was relieved by the physical therapy moves I was taught - but you have to know which ear is acting up to do it. Lately a friend pointed out that it may have a hormonal component - i started having serious problems with my periods 2 years ago, and four months ago had a complete hysterectomy (i mean everything) and my overies had cysts the size of an inch (clear fluid filled). I've just recently gone through a battery of tests (MRI, audiology, positional, vision) and will be getting the results next week. I will also talk to the doctor about hormones to get his take on this. I'm not on hormone replacement therapy, and wonder if estrogen or progesterone is needed.
How does your dizzyness start? Is it suddenly or a continous thing? It does make a difference. Please let me know.
WOW, some great responses, thank you.
Yes, I do believe hormones were the start of it. In short I have had everything surgically removed and am on HRT. Though I feel much better, I cannot get off the medicine. I take 12.5mg of meclizine every 4 hours around the clock, and I mean around the clock. Whenever I have tried to go below this amount I have major problems. (I was on 25mg every hour prior to the surgery in 2001). So, I have been on meclizine for 6 years now. I have somewhat excepted it like someone who has to take thyroid or insulin, its just one of those things I am going to have to take to function, but it is kind of a bummer we cannot get to the orgin.
They have pretty much ruled out any ear thing, as one specialist said, "there is no way it is from your ears, because I could remove your whole middle ear and your body would in a matter of days/weeks learn to re-balance itself". I have not done this.
Lastly, it has been left at either I am trading migraine pain for vertigo (apparently there is some switch in the brain and when a person gets a migrain this switch can turn and you get vertigo instead of pain), they have been unsucessful at diagnosing MS (as this can take up to 10 years sometimes to get a true diagnosis), or I got some wierd virus in my brain stem that did permanat damage.
I was curious to see if anybody else has had it as bad as I have/did.
What is really bad, when I had the intense onset, my doctor would not do anything for me! Had he jumped in at the time, I think I could have a diagnosis.
Hi I have problems with severe vertigo . The dx I got originally was menieres (something to do with the fluid in the inner ear I think! My Gp gave me some tablets but I can't remember the name of them sorry! The vertigo I experience now however is too do with a neurological disorder. Look up Menieres on google and see if it does fit your symptoms. Let us know what you think. Take Care Chris
hi, my husband has vertigo. he takes proclorperazadine for it only when it attacks though .he is ok most of the time but when its bad he cant stand up , if he does he falls over . meds keep it controlled. x x
Are you a female?
If so, have your hormones checked. This is how my menopause started. With extreme bouts of vertigo. On hormones now and vertigo is gone.
Sorry , I just noticed your first comment explaining your problem. Wow!!! My dizzyness would start suddenly like putting on a light switch. So dizzy I had to call operator and get an ambulance. When this happened a third time they thought it was TIA's . However we finally found my potassium to be very low and now I have been clear headed ever since on K-dur a potassium supplement. Good luck to you. I am curious to see if they have checked that out(potassium level). Bye for now, God bless.
I had a bout with "benign positional vertigo" that started back on September 8 and and is just now starting to subside.
In my case, it truely is "positional" vertigo as the dizzy/whirling sensation only happens when I lie flat on my back, rolling over in bed (which I hear is commmon) or if I tip my head all the way back.
I was concerned that its been taking so long for my to go away. My primary doctor referred me to an ENT and I have that appt. on Oct 24. I noticed last night, that it didn't seem as bad so Im hoping (fingers crossed) that it's started to resolve itself. From what I understand, in most cases it does resolve itself. Sometime it's a couple days...sometimes its a couple months.
I do find it interesting that some of you have mentioned hormones. I am 7 weeks pregnant and the whole vertigo thing seems to have started up right around the time I probably concieved. I just figured it was an odd coincidence....but now Im starting to wonder!! :-O
Anyway...vertigo is NOT fun....I unless you've had it, you really can't understand it. And believe me...I understand the frustration!
Multiple times i have had all those test done. I have had everything done but an ENG and spinal tap. And only because I have to be off of my medicine for 2-3 days for the ENG and the spinal tap I think I just got tired of all of it.
what testing have you had so far? Has your thyroid been checked out? Have your blood sugars been tested?
