Numb arm?!

Hi. I'm an - almost - 16 year old girl, and last night I woke up and my entire right arm (from the shoulder to the tips of my fingers) was numb. But not in the "tingling" sense ... but more like I didn't HAVE a right arm. In panic, i tried punching, pinching, and shaking my right arm in hopes it would start working again. Then I hung it over my bed to get the blood moving and it slowly started feeling like an arm again.

Is there a reason this happened?
I have fibromyalgia, but I don't think that could cause it ... this has happened before, but not at night or in this extreme sense. its like my nerves are really sensitive ... even if i cross my legs my feet will fall asleep... any suggestions?

You have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but have they ever run an MRI to check for MS?  Have they checked to make sure you have good circulation?  Have they ever run an EMG to test the nerves in your muscles in your extremities?  I've woken up a couple of times not that long ago with some numbness in my hand.  I finally figured out it had to do with something I was doing in my body position while I slept.  But it might not hurt to get some testing to see if something else is going on if this is a pattern.

Thank you all for this extremely helpful information!

It could be a just slept on it funny ... but just to be sure I'll see if my parents will get me to a Neurologist ... wouldn't hurt to check and make sure everything's working up there :)

Thanks again for these really informative answers ... it means a lot!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Poor circulation can be one cause and should be eliminated by a duplex ultrasound or color dopplar if this has been happening repeatedly. If this is found to be the cause then conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, and peripheral vascular disease will have to be ruled out. The other possibility is a pinched cervical spinal nerve. This can happen due to overuse of computers, work involving straining of neck, herniated disc, canal stenosis, bone disease, spondylosis, poor posture etc. A MRI of the cervical spine and nerve conduction studies may be required. Please consult a neurologist. The treatment is to remove the compression. You have to discuss the best treatment option with a neurologist, which can range from medication to physiotherapy to traction, cervical collars or even surgery. Alternatively you can visit a chiropractor or a physical therapist and learn some exercises which you can do to relieve the compression. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Hope this helps. Take care!
