Numbness

I've been having numbness and tingling on the right side of my body off and on for about 8 months. I've had an M.R.I of my spine and brain and it came back normal, a CT scan of my brain, arm and leg and that as well came back normal. Now I'm having the same numbness from my neck to my right hand and now my arm just feels a little heavy now and it's unbearable to go to sleep, hold anything, grab anything, basicly it's becoming hard to do anything that involve my right hand. And i've been to the neurology and they still haven't found anything that is wrong with me. I need help on why am i having this problem, and also why is the doctors telling me there is nothing wrong with me.

Hi,

Are you experiencing any other symptoms related to your bladder or bowel?

Such pulsations can be seen normally and are not a cause of concern as long as it is not associated with other complaints or symptoms.

But it would be best to bring it up with your doctor and get an abdominal examination done too.

Let us know about what your doctor advises and if you have any other doubts.

Regards.

Hi,

Are you on any medications currently? Are you following up with your doctor for the 'lupus nephritis'?

'Sufferers of lupus nephritis may or may not have symptoms of kidney disease, but it can manifest itself through weight gain, high blood pressure, darker foamy urine or swelling around the eyes, legs, ankles or fingers.

Furthermore, patients may suffer from other symptoms of lupus unrelated to kidney function. Such symptoms can include arthritis, fevers, gastro-intestinal disturbances, headaches, fatigue, and fluid in the joints.'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupus_nephritis

What other symptoms are you having?

Treatment for lupus involves - Medicines that decrease swelling, lower blood pressure, and decrease inflammation by suppressing the immune system: Patients may need to monitor intake of protein, sodium, and potassium.

Patients with severe disease should restrict their sodium intake to 2 grams per day and limit fluid as well. Depending on the histology, renal function and degree of proteinuria, patients may require steroid therapy or chemotherapy regimens such as cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, or cyclosporine.

You should also rule out the following conditions which could lead to numbness and the symptoms that you are having -

These symptoms can also be caused by broader diseases such as peripheral neuropathy (more common in the feet but hands can be affected) and various others. Correct diagnosis of the cause is important and treatment can often reverse the damage. '

'# Other medical conditions, including:

    * Carpal tunnel syndrome
    * Diabetes
    * Migraines
    * Multiple sclerosis
    * Seizures
    * Stroke
    * Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
    * Underactive thyroid

# Abnormal levels of calcium, potassium, or sodium in your body
# A lack of vitamin B12 or other vitamin
# Certain medications
# Toxic action on nerves, such as that from lead, alcohol, or tobacco
# Radiation therapy'

Consult your doctor to find out the cause in your case.

Thanks for the feedback. I do have lupus nephritis, and have had this disease for 3 years now. Do you think it's the lupus that's triggering this numbness in my right side. And also the doctor told me that it couldn't be my lupus. I'm just concern and need to know the next steps that i should take when i go see my doctor and also i will get a second opinion.

Hi,

I am glad that you have asked this here and we will try to help you.

The description of your symptoms appear to indicate some kind of neurological damage which may be described as a Radiculopathy. This happens when the nerve is trapped and transmission of impulses down the nerve does not take place as efficentely as required. Have you had any injuries or similar events in the past? do you have any other medical conditions which you may want to mention here?

There may be several reasons for the radiculopathy. Cervical spondylosis, disc herniation, nerve compression in fascia are just few of them. The doctor may need to some tests called as nerve conduction studies to rule out these and other disorders.

If a doctor is not responding to your complaints, you may try and get a second opinion on this and get a firm diagnosis and treatment for this.

let me know if you need additional information.
