You may have migraines which can occur at any age in life.
It is good to take the initiative and be your own advocate. You go in with a list of symptoms, when they started, on a scale of one to ten how bad the pain is & what you want them to do for you. They may have additional ideas about other tests to run or referrals to make, but you can at least tell them what you would like to do. They may want to do a CT scan because it is cheaper and that sort of scan is generally supposed to be good for picturing heads, but if you are concerned about the radiation, tell them so and that's one reason why you favor an MRI. They should also want to take a look at the blood vessels with the scan, since you are having dizziness- so you'll want to try to get a scan with and without contrast.
They found a meningioma brain tumor on a close relative of mine after she had a severe migraine with a CT scan and went on to order an MRI after that. If you have had any kind of new hearing loss on that side, to search for an acoustical neuroma takes a special scan.
You might also want to set up an appointment with an opthamologist who can order a field of vision test. This is also something they ordered for my relative (her tumor was close to and later I think touching the optic nerve). If it is your peripheral vision that is having the problem, they may want to scan your pituitary gland (takes a special scan).
Also, you might want to consider TMJ, which can hurt in the ear area and up into the head. I have TMJ problems with arthritis in my jaws (if you have an overbite as I do, there is a greater tendency toward this kind of problem) & the pain can go up to into my head and cause migraines at times. Then migraines can make one nauseated.
But you are right to want a scan to check for brain tumor. And any doctor worth their salt who hears about a guy with a new kind of severe headache should be ordering a brain scan without even having to be asked to do it. So, may I encourage you to go to a well trained physician about this for your loved ones and yourself. And please give me an update?
