Recovery from MVA

My husband is recovering from a major Vehicle accident, he suffered many broken bones, dislocatons, brain hemorage, eye damage, mouth and chin cuts, and had to have a tracheoctomy and peg while in hospital. the accident happened 15th Nov 2011. He was in hospital for 8 weeks and three days. He is now gaining weight and mobility... he says he feels a numbness on the left side of his abdomen and his whole left leg... and that when something touches it he doesnt know if its hot or cold, nice or painful, so it all feels very uncomfortable. Is it due to the brain hemorage or is it nerve related? and what can we do to help him?

What a hard time you have both been going through.

This is defiantly nerve related. I have undiagnosed nervous system disorder and I get this actually but more in the groin, and down my left leg, numbness and not being able to tell if someone touches my leg or not. It certainly could be the after affects of the accident it will take a long time for all the nerves to heal, and it oculd be the results of the brain hemoraghe or just that the accident has caused some spinal cord trauma.

My MIL had a stroke which affected her left side and loss of feeling totally in her right leg, and the physio had her up and about making her walk. If you stop using it you loose it was what she was told.

I do the same try to keep on my feet as much as I can to strengthen the muscles.

I really hope you get things sorted soon. We moan in our country the UK about our NHS but this would never happen we get our medical help free.

Since i have been reading on USA forums I have stopped moaning about her medical care. We have it so made in the UK.

I have sent a little prayer your way hope things settle soon.xx

thank you for all your comments... yes we also believe that we must keep aactive... we have noticed over the weeks the numbness is easing... we exercise together and that helps us get on with it... Derik was amazing yesterday as he had his first journey sitting in a car in the front and walking about town... he climbed steps into the bank and tried shoes on in another shop... he was delighted and it helps so much to be able t get out... as cabin fever can drive us a bit crazy  grin... thanks for the prayer and loving thoughts... yes as an ex pat from UK i miss NHS very much... Australias system is pretty good too... but expensive... we lived there for three years... but Derik got the best help when he was first injured... the Dr's and nurses at the Joburg General were awesome and God could work through their hands with ease... so that was a blessing indeed... and the road accident fund is brilliant too... UK needs to take that one on and SA needs to take the NHS on... good things in all countries... :) put them together and it would be awesome...
have a great pain free day

We live in South Africa and there is an accident road fund that we are claiming... my husband hit a car side on who was doing a u-turn on a bend and who didnt have a licence to drive!!!!!! We have free medical care but its government run hospitals and training hospitals... there were so many doctors treating him and moving on over those eight weeks that it is difficult to get verbal help as suggested... however i can ring the nurses and ask their advice... however i have been able to give him my care as i ws a nurse in the 80's and 90's.... and i have enough understanding with most medical things in general... and information on the internet has been brilliant in helping us... especially with physio etc... we understand that brain hemorage is treated like a stroke... which i have worked with and been able to rehabilitate many patients... so he is coming along fine. He will be getting help shortly as money is arriving from earnings i have been making.. i am an artist and have been painting two tigers for orders from Austrlia... so that is very useful. Thank you for all your suggestions and concern... we will be getting the right people to look at him and he will be able to afford it now.

Was he considered indigent when in the hospital?  Do they know that you are unable to pay your bills?  Since he was in for so long, there is a rapport with the doctors and I'm sure that if you called one of them up and explained the situation, they would give you some idea of where a person can go to get help when they cannot afford it.  Obviously this is a no small matter and you need to try everything you can to get your husband the help he needs.  I assume this was his fault and you cannot go after the other person's insurance to pay for the cost of medical care?  You may also want to look into social security benefits or even medicare?  I'm not an insurance person so I'm just kind of throwing these things out as possible options to look further into.

Yes, praying is always good but you need to act while you pray :)

Really I felt very sad with tragedy and trauma you are going through. We can only do the best we have if we are well to do, and still have to pray to the Omnipotent Almight for making the things happen in better ways. But in case we don't have any resources, still we should be more submissive towards the Almighty, and pray with more humbleness to take us out of this trauma, both physical mental and economical. The best time for such prayers is in isolated place at midnight hrs. He loves more than 70 mothers love for his childrens, and if a person in distress calls him with full faith in Him as the only Cherisher, Sustainer and the Merciful, then he turns with a very fast action and attends to his caller in distress with great care.
The results may vary, 1) You will get what you want, or 2) You will get the alternative or replacement to your demand or 3) You calls will not be replied but will be stored in the bank of the Almighty, and on the day of judgment you will get such a nice reward for you patience and prayers, that the person we feel all of my prayers would not have been fulfilled..
God bless us All

He didnt tell them about it... as he only started speaking properly the day he was discharged when they took the trachea pipe out.... and as we are both not working and have no benifits or help we cant afford to get to see a Dr at the moment... i am just worried that the exercises he is doing might be making it worse. He see's double and has to put his head down to see me clearly and he says when he does that he gets a funny feeling in his body...

If he is having numbness to this degree it would seem to me there is some major nerve damage and he needs to see a neurologist.  Did they discharge him from the hospital/rehab with this numbness or did it come after he got home?
