MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
If you have pain and jerky movements during sleep, then get this investigated by a sleep specialist. During sleep a phase comes called as Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. During this phase the sleep is deepest. During this sleep the muscles go in a paralysis like state and the person sleeping appears to be ‘dead to the world’. If there is a disorder off this phase of sleep, then muscle paralysis like state does not happen and the person ends up flailing, grabbing, jumping, falling out of bed, kicking, talking trashing etc. Mostly this is caused by excess use of alcohol, as a side effect of some sedatives, Parkinson’s disease, shy-Drager syndrome, a degenerative disease characterized by a drop in blood pressure when standing, and dementia related to age or disease. This is something that can be diagnosed by a combination of recording BP in several positions, MRI of the brain and sleep studies. Medically this is treated with Clonazepam, however please do not start this without consulting a doctor.
The other possibility is that you have a seizure attack and suffer from sleep apnea. This again can be diagnosed by a combination of EEG and sleep studies. You will need to consult a sleep specialist and a neurologist. Take care!
