Prodrome, dermatological or nothing

For the past four years I have been getting an itch i the same spot on my lower left lip.  It seems in some ways to be like prodrome, which unfortunantely I am familiar with since getting cold sores as a kid, but a cold sore never actually comes.  Sometimes it is fleeting other times near constant for weeks or a month at a time.  I have hit it with all the a ton of cold sore medications out there but to seemingly no effect.  Those with analgesic make it feel better for a bit but  it won't go away and it is driving me mad thinking I am constantly contagious.  Although classic cold sores I only get a couple times a year i am very paranoid and upset by them and this is messing with my mind big time.  Also, if i get an itchy bump on the lip near the border of being inside my mouth that goes away in 2-3 days is that a minor cold sore or just a bump.

Obtaining a herpes blood test can help determine if the infection is due herpes labialis.  If so, preventive medications (i.e. antivirals) may be considered to help with the outbreaks.

Otherwise, seeing a dermatologist and obtaining a possible biopsy of the lesion can be considered to give a more conclusive diagnosis.

This option can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
