Sensation like skin crawling

Hi
For several months I have been getting this weird sensation that my skin is crawling.  This happens just behind my right shoulder blade in exactly the same place every time.  It generally happens for no reason that I can fathom.  It is a sort of itching sensation and then a sensation that there is something crawling under my skin.  When I rub it with my fingers it disappears for a while but inevitably it returns within a few minutes.  There is no pain involved.
Would be interested to find out if there is a medical explanation for this!
Many thanks
Lola

Can't give you much help, but I have the same thing except mine is on the left shoulder blade.  Have had it for years, doesn't happen all the time, but I think it has to do with muscle tension.  Sometimes at night when I go to bed, I go to lie down and where that feeling is, it will grab, and I have to move my left arm a different way until it relaxes.  Sorry I couldn't help much more.  Take care!!

Not sure, but I've seen a show on parasites a long time ago, and I just thought of it when I read your post. They showed different people w/different cases of parasites and other things (like a leach in ones man's sinus'). One had insisted he felt something crawling under his skin, he finally saw it in his eye and they were able to help him after that. Sounds awful, I know, but stranger things have happened. Do you remember any insect bites, traveled at all? Anything at all that you can think of? It might be a nerve or a muscle spasm as suggested, but if you can pinpoint the "crawling feeling," might be worth checking out possible parasites. (And this is JUST my opinion! it was just too interesting to pass up.)

Well, hityty, you really have put the cat among the pigeons with that comment!  I'm imagining all sorts of weird and wonderful things going on underneath my skin - bugs having the time of their lives, crawlies creeping, etc etc.  No, I haven't been to any exotic places recently so I don't think that has caused it but I think I will mention it to my GP next time I visit him, just for curiosity!

try and go get adjusted by a chiropractor, the reason i say this is bc i used to have patient that came in with not being able to move arms, tingling pins and needles feeling(crawling), muscles spasum, stiff necks, lose of grips..etc. Try that maybe that could work.....and if not try the parasite thing, which btw i saw that show about it and that is not a show to watch when u are a hypercondriate :) Good luck and write back on how u are feeling luv.

Didn't mean to scare you or imply anyone is a hypochondriac! Sorry about the cat and pigeons, it was just a thought, and everyone has parasites to some degree, so don't worry, its just something you can ask your GP like you said! Let us know.

Hi this is my first post.  I also have suffered with sensations of that feel as if ants or crawling bugs are crawling under and on the skin since 1993.  Sometimes the sensations would last for short periods of time - from a few minutes to hours, only to go away and come back again, days, months or year later.

Hi!
I've read what you said about Kundalini Rising.
I would have some questions as I think I am going through the same thing, but I don't know if you're still using this site.

Wow. I am so glad I found this posting...great info.

I have had this crawling sensation ( I keep thinking there's a spider on my left upper back) ever since I got back from vacation. In fact, I remember the first time I felt it was while I was still on vacation, and it was just a few days after I found that I had a ringworm rash (has nothing to do with worms - fungus on the skin). Anyway I treated that for well over 2 weeks until the rash/red spot was not visible for a few days.  But ever since I had that damn thing I have felt that crawling sensation. No numbness, just spider crawling.

I'm 30 - so for all I know I'm not pre-menopausal.  There's nothing visual I can see on my back that would make me believe I have some parasite in my skin.  And I dn't believe it's Kundalini rising - it's not a sensation going up and down my spine. It's in a 1 inch radius in the same spot on my back.  In any case, this posting has helped me because I now feel a little bit better that I'm not paranoid and making this up. I'll make sure I go see a doc.

ever thing of it being a mildly pinched nerve. same thing here right between my right shoulder blade and spine, usually caused by too many hours on the computer, pay attention if its in the area of your hunch while sitting at your computer. most people dont have perfect posture especially when typing on a keyboard in a chair that may not be best suited for their height. i went three days without sleep and spent the majority of time on this damned contraption. ocham's razor

I have suffered from the crawling symptons " like ants runing around under my skin" in both my feet & calves all my life, mostly at night it wakes me up & i have found the only way to relieve it is to get up & stand on a cold floor or spray my legs with a cold water spray, my mother gets it day & night,  my daughter also sufferes with it, oddly it seems to get passed down but only to the females in the family, my GP is baffled by it, anyone have any ideas what it is.

It's most likely neurological in nature. Look up parastethias.

I too have been a victim to this crawling thing, but its not just in one area. I feel it across my stomach, face, neck, back and even around my arse. It feels like tiny insects/bugs crawling over me but when i look there is nothing there. Its not all the time either, it comes and goes. Its driving me mad though. Sometimes I cant sleep at night.

It's funny how people get from a curling sensation behind your shoulder to your entire body feeling like you have ants.
I would like to say that my sensation of something curling under my skin is excitedly where some of the others have felts this. In my case, behind my left shoulder, in a small spot. And always in the same spot.  It's been going on now for about 4yrs.  It seems to go away during the winter months, but come summer, it's back.
Recently I had a dermatologist tell me it was something called Entrapped Nerves.  He gave me some sort of cortisone cream to put on twice daily.  It seemed to have help, but I stopped using it because....let's just say I try not to use chemicals on my skin or internally.
I'll be seeing a new doctor this week and I'm looking forward to her opinion. I'll keep you all posted.

I have the same sympton as Lola and Swimmingbear.  It is a crawling/tingling/itching sensation on or under my left shoulder blade.  It is always in the same spot, and I have had it for about 3 to 4 years as well.  I put a rubber ball between my back and office chair for relief.  However, it only helps for a minute of two.  It doesn't hurt at all.  It is just a little annoying.

I've had this for a couple of years and I'm experiencing it right now.  I believe it is my muscles twitching all over.  I have the funcky feeling like someone is massaging my back only I'm not reeping the benefits of it!  It's on my whole upper back.  Sometimes I worry I'm going to have a heart attack or something else medical is wrong with me.  I've searched for answers and I really think it's a nerve or muscle gone crazy. :)

I have just started to experience this in the last 2 months.  I am concerned because my Mother has had several strokes, Bells Palsy, and Temporal artheritis.  It occurs on my left temple, and feels like little bugs crawling under my skin.   I scratch it and it goes away for a few seconds, but then it is back.  I only have it on my temple and no where else.  Anyone else experience this on their temple??

Let me give you some good advice.  Don't try and get it diagnosed.  Unless you are having severe pain, breathing problems or feel like your head is going to pop off learn to live with it.  For some reason as good as the medical community is they are not good at diagnosing numbness and tingling or creepy crawling sensations.  I know this because I have been trying to get something similiar to this diagnosed for several years.  I had a diagnosis  years ago but apparently I don't have that any more and the rediagnosis process has put me through hell and thousands of dollars and I still don't know what it is.  That's with good health insurance.  I feel sorry for you and hope you feel better.  Good luck and I hope it goes away soon.

Thank you for this site...I've read everything and there's so many answers here.  The tingling/pin prickin' creepy crawling sensation I just got for the first time yesterday and I freaked out.  Ask-a-nurse went to the body lice/parasite explanation but really seemed to not have an answer.  Not knowing if it's lice/scabies/parasites I read Tea Tree Oil is the cure all for parasites(all).  I thoroughly put some oil in my shampoo/soap, washed clothes in hot, dropping some oil in the laundry.
I'm still having the sensations.  I've just started playing piano actively again and I'm going now more with muscle spasms--I'm getting a lot of sensations in my forearms where the strainwould be from this activity, but I'm getting that annoying sensation all over! At night, we have no distractions, just lying there feeling the crawling--it is maddening and I hope it goes away soon!!  peace to all, we'll make it through!!
