Small painless bump on lower lip? What is it?

Hello,

Yesterday morning I woke up with a small painless bump about a centimeter from the corner of my mouth on my lower lip.  It's on the lip itself, not the border and not inside my mouth. It's not red, it doesn't feel swollen, and it doesn't hurt, even if I touch it.  At first I thought it might be a cold sore, though I've never had one before.  I'm a very low positive for hsv-1, though I haven't confirmed with a Western Blot so it could be false. I'm not sick or stressed in any way and I don't really think it's a cold sore.  I've had burning in my upper lip (a different location than this bump) for nearly 8 months but I'm fairly certain it's not hsv-1 related (prodromes can't last that long, can they?).  I don't have insurance or I'd get it checked out. The bump started out small, about 2 or 3 mm across.  It feels like a hard bump under the skin, kind of like a tapioca bead.  There's no puss in it and when I tried to drain it there was only a little bit of clear liquid.  Today, the bump is way smaller, probably less than half it's original size. It looks like a tiny pimple with no pus. You can barely see it unless I push the lip out with my tongue.  There's still no pain.  I'm just curious as to what it is.  It's not a mucocele or acne.  The only thing I've done differently is drink a bunch of canned soda recently.  Could the acid in the drinks create a bump on my lip?  I've had them on my tongue after eating sour candy, but I've never had one on my lip.  I'm not too concerned, I'm just trying to figure out what it is in case it is a cold sore because I don't want to spread it to my boyfriend.

Do you use lip balm? I've seen online alot of people complaining of little bumps containing fluid after they use lip balm. Alot of the lip balm's were very common, Burt's Bee's being one of them. Maybe worth it to check it out :)

I'm not even sure if it is a cold sore.  I've got abreva and I've tried it on the part of my lip that burns but it does not help.  I'm fairly certain the burning is from a nerve injury.  My boyfriend already knows about all this.  I just don't want to infect him if it is a cold sore, which I don't think it is.

i am not an expert, but i agree the acid in soda is probably not helpful.  Since you mention a burning sensation, have you tried an over-the-counter product called Abreva?  It may be available as a generic, so it would not be as expensive as the brand name.  I really hope you can be honest with your bf &let him know it could be a cold sore.  Many people get them.  Our family often uses Lysine tablets (a vitamin supplement) 500mg whenever we think a cold sore is starting.  Good luck.
