Total Digestive System Discomfort

I am a 20-year-old female.  I have been a vegetarian for 10 years and practice healthy, well-rounded eating habits.  Just over two months ago, I started having either completely liquified stools or constipation--no happy medium.  When I experience diarrhea, I have a bowel movement EVERY time I go to urinate.  My stomach constantly feels cramped.  I also have been experiencing nausea and heartburn pretty consistently by the end of the day.  I haven't experienced any weight loss from the symptoms.

I've been trying all sorts of things to help--I've been taking tums when I feel heartburn or stomach discomfort, when I am constipated for days at a time I take magnesium to induce bowel movements, and when I have constant diarrhea I take Imodium.

Nothing seems to stop the cycle and I'm confused as to what is wrong.  I prefer to take care health concerns without consultation from a physician, but it seems that's what I need to do.  I would like to have an idea of what is wrong before I go to the doctor; from my research, it looks like an IBS or IBD condition.

Any thoughts?

Increase your Vitamin D3, B-12 (always sub-lingual) and up your fiber intake.

* I also agree with Gio77italy above.. you should see your Dr. and get some blood and stool labs done to rule out any bacteria, fungal or parasitic infection. Wishing you a fast recovery. Be well.

I also have IBS.. it is very unusual for a young woman of your age to have IBS.

Vitamin B12 deficiency causes numerous symptoms but includes alternating diarrhea/constipation, nausea, acid reflux, and abdominal pain. All vegetarians and vegans should supplement with vitamin B12.  Sublingual (under the tongue) B12 is recommended. I use sublingual B12 spray with great results.

since you're a vegetarian there are good chances that you've been in contact with raw vegetables and you caught a bacterial infection.

to say what type of bacteria or virus, it is pretty difficult.

blood tests, serology, liver enzims, kidneys, urine tests for bacteria, stool test , are a start.
