Metformin is brand named Glucophage, and is usually used in Diabetes, but they have found that many women with PCOS have "insulin resistance", and correcting the problem with the insulin usually helps the PCOS symptoms.
IS "METFORMIN" AN ANDROGEN LOWERING DRUG? I READ OVER THE INTERNET THAT "SPIRONOLACTONE" AND "FLUTAMIDE" ARE USUALLY GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH P.C.O.D. ALSO... "FINASTERIDE", "PROSCAR", AND "PROPECIA" ARE GIVEN FOR HAIR LOSS. DOES ANY OF THESE MEDICATIONS SEEM FAMILAR?
I was just diagnosed as hypothyroid however the Dr. suspected adrenal failure as I was losing weight, nausea......it is called addison's disease. Just an idea. You may want to do some research.
the polycystic ovarian disease sounds like it could be me!however, i have had 6 successful pregnancies! each one i had low progesterone and was on progesterone suppositories. i am not over weight, i weigh 160lbs and am 5'9", and i dont diet. i used to be extreamly skinny, but now i am normal in weight, after my sixth child, before all these symptoms started, i had terrible cysts, one was suspicious, and then the extream hair loss, etc...but the first signs of male facial hair started at age 21, my first few hairs were on my throat, now there are many on my throat with a few on the jaw line. i started taking vitamins and using rogain, and i just started the birth control pill. is there anything else i can do??? i am so scared i will be bald soon! i will bring up the p.o.d. to my doc tomorrow and see what he says. any help would be appreciated, thankyou!
Some women with PCOS are not overweight, but most are. Also, some do ovulate. PCOS can occur later in life. You may also have another type of hormonal imbalance, or be peri-menopausal (although you seem too young for that). Pcos is usually treated with birth control pills, and metformin. I suggest having a complete female hormone panel of bloodwork done as your starting point. Good luck, and post if you get any answers.
Have you been evaluated for PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)? Google it, and see if it sounds familiar.
