People don't get oedema just because they get old.
There usually is an underlying problem which needs to be ruled out first.
In older people it can be caused by kidney and heart problems.
In younger people that can happen too, but also through a hormone imbalance, like retaining fluid a few days before the menstrual cycle begins.
Don't be fooled into thinking that you need to cut down on your water intake. In fact you still need to have plenty of fluids unless you have been directed by your doctor or other professional about the amount that you should drink.
Cutting out salt and sugar can help. A salty diet will retain the fluids in the body. Eating a healthy and balanced diet with Evening Primrose oil will help for menstrual problems and some mild diuretics can be purchased from the large supermarket stores or from the pharmacy. Coffee, celery and cucumber and also good diuretics.
If you suffer from hypertension, the doctor may prescribe medication for that as well as a diuretic which helps to bring down the blood pressure.
Some medications can also cause oedema.
i also have this problem!! my doctor prescribed a water pill to take!! im older and this has just started !! he said it was edema!!! edema often happens to older people!!! but it could be a number of things causing this so be sure to check with your doctor!!! ihope this has helped somewhat!!
You need to make an appointment to see your doctor to get checked out what is causing this problem.
Sometimes swelling in the feet can be from injury, or fluid retention due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy or menopause but sometimes it can also indicate a problem with the kidneys or heart or lymphatic problem.
At home cut down on your salt intake and elevate your legs as much as you can when you are sitting and resting, this will help to draw the fluid away from your feet.
