Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
If the hypothyroidism (naturally due to absent thyroid) is very severe then the thyroid gland may be poorly developed and not be visible. If this has been detected in your case, consult an endocrine specialist immediately. Hope this helps. Take care!
Nope, not that unusual. It is called congenital hypothyroidism. Just follow what you usually do for hypothyroidism. It is caused by one of two things. Graves disease can cause the thyroid to burst, which is a very serious problem and may require "cleaning" surgery. Some people are just born with out a thyroid. Hello, I am not a dr. but my sister has graves disease and i have hypothyroid. we have both been on synthroid for about as long as you and neither of us have a missing thyroid. Did you and your dr talk about this? it is a bit unusual to me. maybe talking to the dr treating you would be your best option and also another sonogram in case of error. my dr did a external and internal ultrasound of my female organs. She informed me I had two perfectly fine falopian tubes. I had to inform her I only had a right one. My left one literally exploded when i was 15 due to a tubal pregnancy. As far as I know those dont grow back.
