To answer your questions:
1) It is possible that the infection may be related to an STD.
2) Depending on the cause, the infection may last several week sto months. Some cases of prostatitis can last 4-12 months.
3) It can also be urethritis unrelated to an STD. STDs can be transmitted anytime there is no barrier contraception present.
4) Difficult to say without examination. If the symptoms are continuing, you can consider sending off prostatic fluid for analysis and culture, or a transrectal ultrasound to evaluate for any abscesses.
5) As mentione above, a transrectal ultrasound to evaluate the prostate, or a cystoscopy, can be considered for further evaluation.
6) It may be possible that the infection has not spread to your wife.
7) A urethral stricture or urethral polyp can be considered if infection has been ruled out.
