overinflated bladder

Hello,

My Mom was diagnoised with expanded bladder during the catscan and the doctor has put catheter for one week. It was so large that it was putting pressure on her kidney and thats why she was having sever pain in the stomach and back. It's been 3 days not and she is already feeling better.

My concern is can this reoccur again?? If so how long does it take for something like this ot occur again(days, weeks or months) Also does the bladder looses its elasticity if it has been over expanded so much?

Dr tell that some irritation could have caused it.

Another thing observed was that her urethra opening was extremely small that even when the nurse was numbing it the cutip would not go thru and the dr had to use the dialator to widen her opening to introduce the scope. Could this contribute to her not able to empty her bladder complerely and so she has the urge to go frequently to the restroom.

Are there any other concerns that i should be aware of ?

Thanks.

A bladder that fails to empty can obstruct the flow of urine from the kidneys and cause kidney failure, abdominal pain. The bladder must be drained and allowed to rest in order for it to function in the future.  Usually, bladder function returns if it has not been chronically stretched. but it may take a few months (with the catheter left in or with intermittent catheterization about every four hours, day and night).
It is not likely that the size of her urethra caused her to by unable to urinate, but the cause is not obvious from what you have told me. She will need to have her bladder function evaluated and this may give some idea as to what caused her problem in the first place. I cannot say whether she will need any surgery in the future. You are asking some good questions, however, I cannot give you  the answers that her urologist can as that physician knows more about the specifics of her situation.
Good luck!

she has been put on a catheter only, right? No operation has been done. I am afraid she will need some small operation and a long time on catheter. And yes it may recurr and she may be on regular dilatations
