retention of urine

I am a 27 years old female. Till now i had five bouts of acute retention of urine.After catheterisation I am fine, no urine symptoms in between these attacks. My urologist has checked and investigated me thoroughly [ivp,usg,cystoscopy] ,everything is normal. No residual urine or straining or incontinence in between.NO medication. I had caeserian followed  by infection five years back.Please guide.

Dear Soni,

Acute urinary retention is not a common event in young females like it is in older men.  Acute urinary retention in young females can herald the onset of neurologic disease like multiple sclerosis.  Retention can also be the result of some medications.  Since your problems are reoccurring and no structural abnormalities were seen on cystoscopy, you should undergo formal urodynamics.


You should probably keep a voiding diary for three days and document the frequency of your urination as well as the volume of each void.  Also, you need to have a formal post void residual performed by your doctor.  You must first void and then be immediately catheterized after.  If this number is less than say 50cc, I don
