Lost 45 pounds In the hospital bed in 45 days

I'm not sure if I am on the right forum. I have a question. My dear brother was in a terrible skydiving accident 45 days ago. He was in ICU for 30 days and then they moved him to the trauma ward for 14 days and now he is at the rehab center, day one...

He weighed 245 when he entered the hospital 45 days ago and the weighed him on a hospital bed yesterday and he weighs 200.... He has lost almost all the muscles in his legs because he hasnt walked or even sat up in 45 days because of spinal injury and broken ribs. He is able to sit up with assistance now.. He can feel both legs all the way down to his toes but he can only flex hos leg muscles a tiny bit. I assumed it is because he is such a big guy and he has been on a feeding tibe for 45 days and has only sat up for the firat time, yesterday..he is 6'4" and so skinny now..

My question is. Is it possible to loose all your leg muscles and then rebuild them all the way back to normal?? What does it take for this to happen? How long does it take?

Im so scare he will never walk again but i wont let myself believe that because he was moving all of his extremidies all the way up until day 14 or 15. He slowly slowly lost alittle more and alittle more strength.

He is only 26. Will he be able to regrow his muscles and walk again??

It is possible to loss muscle mass and to rebuild it.
Your brother will be given exercises at the rehab centre where he is.
It takes as long as it takes.  Regenerating muscle seems relatively easy but when you factor in other physical and mental trauma.  Some people are in rehab for months, if not years.  Your brother's recovery and journey will be unique to him.

If you have questions, could you not address them to your brother's doctor?  In my experience, doctor's are often willing to inform relatives.

I'm not a doctor but it sounds as though your brother has some promising signs.  He has feeling and some movement.  Maybe swelling has affected movement??

I think that your brother has been unwell and may need considerable time to heal.  I think that your brother should be able to walk again but you will need to ask his doctor and even then may just need to take it on a day by day basis.

If you are scared now I expect when your brother is feeling a little better that he too will feel scared and overwhelmed.  A positive outlook can significantly improve a persons recovery.

Good luck.  I wish your brother a speedy recovery and hope that he will one day soon be walking again.

Worst case:  your brother can't walk but he is still alive.  Life is everything!
