Causes of a VERY early period?

Hello,
I am 22, and until now have always had a fairly normal menstrual cycle. I am in a monogamous relationship, and although I am no longer on birth control, we always use a condom.
Sometimes (although not everytime), I've had some spotting during sex. (I have no idea what the cause of this is.) The other night, this happened... but then it basically turned out to be my period. This wouldn't be strange except that if it is in fact my period, it is almost 2 weeks early!! On top of that, it has been extremely heavy compared to my normal period.
Does anyone have any suggestion as to what might be causing this? Anything I've read says that early periods are often caused by stress (which I really am not experiencing.. at least not until now!) or a severe change in body weight (which has not occurred).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

But a one-time experience of heavy and quick dark clots during sex? Earlier that day all was fine. Afterwards, I didn't have any spotting that night or the next day at all. Period was clockwork and came 9 days later as scheduled  (thanks to the pill).

I recently had something similiar happen.  I'm 29, and I have been on birth control for about 8 years. In the early part of the 3rd week of my 'active' pills this heavy, one time spotting occurred.  It started during sex. It was more than any sort of tear could make, and some of it was globby from tissue - so I thought it was uterine lining sheading like a period...but it stopped that evening. no spotting the next day. And I wasn't last with any of the pills this month or the month before. So, what the heck?! A 1 hour period?  Is this due to stress?
Any chance of it being an early miscarriage?
