Why does sex hurt?

Sex has been painful for me for almost 2 years now, I get ripping sensation the first time I am entered and then a friction/burning sensation that gets progressively worse throughout intercourse. I have seen a urologist who has tested me numerous times for bv, trichinosis and thrush and all but one of four tests have come back negative (I had a mild case of thrush). The doctor informed me that the skin on the outside of my vagina is normal and not particularly red despite it feeling sore. The real pain is deeper inside (although not near my cervix).

I have used internal moisuring treatments, anaesthetic ointments (which are difficult to get far enough inside and on the right point), steroid creams and I have now been prescribed a 6 month course of antifungals to eliminate thrush.

The doctor has said that the pain isn’t being caused by my muscles contracting as I remain completely relaxed when she tested for this.

A break from sex (3/4 weeks) also doesn’t improve the symptoms.

I am completely at the end of my tether - it’s extremely upsetting and is effecting my relationship with my boyfriend. I just want to be able to have sex without pain again..
