I decided a very long time ago to combine condoms and temperature/ mucous charting. It works very well if you are mature enough to refrain from having sex during the critical days. I also have the sponge but never tried it. As for the pill, I found it had too much impact on my overall well-being when I was twenty, so I am definitely not going to experiment with it decades later. IUDs and diaphrams work for many women but not for me. I got pregnant with both but that`s not the norm. I would decide this way: if you are going to have a lot of sex and likely want to avoid getting pregnant by all means due to age risks, choose one of the safest methods like IUD if you can bear the feeling of it. Second choice the pill if it is not for yeasr in a row. If however you are only going to have occasional sex, it would not be worth it to put your body through all the side effects. Then I would go with the condom and charting method. Gives you some protection from STDs as well. Personally, I chose abstinence as the thought of getting pregnant again in my forties is too scary.

I was on the pill for over 10 years, up until about 12 years ago, and never had any problems. Now I'm almost 40, and I've just started taking it again (backup birth control, but mostly for period suppression). I think the biggest concern for older women is if you smoke. If you don't smoke and haven't had problems in the past, I wouldn't think it would be a problem.
