BLUE NIPPLE DISCHARGE...here is what i've been through is there anyone out there with any other type of answers/help

RE: BLUE BREAST DISCHARGE:  Hi!  I am a 35 yr old female who has had a constant blue nipple discharge out of my LEFT breast ONLY.  This has occured daily for the past 2 years.  (The discharge did not, nor has ever not been present on a daily basis for 2 years)  I went to my family doctor who hadn't a clue, she referred me to my gyno, who although had also NEVER seen a blue discharge he did perform my first mammogram October 2008.  At that time the results were normal.  January 2010 not only do I have this blue, sticky substance flowing from my left breast, I am now in great pain (at times) and discovered (it seemed as though overnight) a lump.  I went back to my gyno who performed another mammogram on January 26, 2010.  An abnormality showed up so an ultra-sound was performed the same day.  The results from the ultrasound were "medially in the left breast, 2-3 centimeters from the nipple, there appear to be side by side small cysts measuring overall 6 millimeters x 7 millimeters x 3 millimeters.  In the same region there is a very tiny hypoechoic structure as well.  The axilla appears to be normal at this time."CONCLUSION:  Small cluster of cysts that appear to be accounting for the mammographic abnormality.  My gyno was not impressed with the results since he is very concerned with the blue substance that he has never seen.  He referred me to a general surgeon.  The end of February I go to my appt. and can you believe that this surgeon has not ever seen the blue discharge either.  (We are now up to 3 doctors.)  He did a culture of the substance, which as of today (3-18-2010) is still unknown.  He also tested for blood and infection, both were negative.  I had an MRI with and without contrast March 2, 2010.  The findings and impressions are as follows: "Unremarkable MRI of the breasts.  Negative imaging study should not deter from the investigation of a clinically suspicious abnormality.  That being said, this surgeon then referred my to a comprehensive cancer center physician.  I saw my 4th doctor today (3-18-2010)  within a short 8 week period.  I was referred to a top notch cancer treatment center because of the 3 prior doctors never encountering this.  I got up this morning feeling anxious and kind-of giddy thinking 'I'm gonna find out what the blue goo is today!!!  Guess what ladies and gents?!?!?  The absolutely WONDERFUL news is that it is NOT cancerous, but this doctor has NEVER saw a blue discharge either.  This is a doctor from the James Cancer center.  I was dumbfounded.  He does believe that the several cysts that I have are somehow blocking my ducts and I go back to him in 3 months at which time if the cysts have not dissolved or disappeared and the blue discharge is still there he wants to go in and remove ALL of the ducts, etc... I would really like to find out WHAT, WHERE, WHY do i have this blue substance in my breast.  I'd feel 100% reassured to know this.  I have been asked every question imaginable by these doctors.  'Do you drink anything blue, what types of meds are you on, any breast trauma, etc...etc...etc..." The best one of all...(while the doctor is reading my file BEFORE he has seen the discharge him/herself have asked...Are you sure it is 'blue?'  When they see the actual color is blue they are seem shocked.  BEFORE going through with this surgery I want answers.  This is NOT normal.  Can someone please help?!?!? This is driving me nuts!  (I am 35 yrs. old, mother of two children--ages 15 and 13, happily married, I did NOT breastfeed, I do smoke cigarettes, I do NOT drink, nor do any type of illegal drugs.  I do take Zofran for vomiting and Lomotil for my stomach (these two symptoms NOT related to the breast, it was due to gallbladder removal.)  Any questions or comments would be greatly appreciated!    ***@****

I'm a 36 year old mother and I also have this blue discharge from my RIGHT breast only....I see that your question was posted back in 2010. Have you had the cysts removed or did they go away on their own?

Hi HayJay85, sorry for the delay in response.  Have you see your physician about this?  Nipple discharge can be common during the reproductive years even if you aren't expecting or nursing. A blue tinged discharge can be infection or cyst related most often. Do you have any pain or heat? This article lists numerous things that can cause this.  Most are not serious.    https://www.healthline.com/health/womens-health/nipple-discharge#causes  It's important to have a doctor rule out anything serious, however.  Let us know how things are now.

Well you've certainly been to enough Dr.s but I must say that blue or black breast discharge is NOT unheard of and it is usually associated with benign cysts. That most likely is true in your case since some small cysts have been demonstrated on film. These cysts can interfere with the ducts and cause a hardening of the ducts. I would hope that the cysts will also be removed when you have the ductal surgery. This combination will certainly solve your problem. It is a benign condition so you are fortunate in that respect.   Best wishes .....
