Back pain, Complex ovarian cyst, swollen lymph nodes, Dr says 'stress related'

Hi Everyone, I have been having severe back pain on my right side which they thought was a kidney stone, but CT scan only showed what the PA called a large complex ovarian cyst.  My Dr. wants to do normal "wait and see" but will not address my pain.  She suggests it is stress related (my stress = back pain that will not go away!!!) and wants me to go to PT, without even touching my back!  The only time my back hurts is when I am putting pressure on the RT side (sitting, laying), but once it starts, takes days to reduce.  Icing, but not heat helps.  My grandmother had a HUGE ovarian cyst and later died of ovarian cancer, so I feel like it should at least be considered that this is causing my pain.  Are some of my other symptoms consistent with something caused by a cyst--swollen lymphnodes, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, numbness/tingling in limbs on cyst side, vertigo, extremely painful periods with nausea and vomiting.
I am already seeking another opinion, but I would like to know how vigorously I should pursue the possibility of pain being caused by the cyst.  I am taking 600mg ibuprofen and it does nothing!  I just want the pain to go away...please help!

I had a ruptured cyst one year ago , since then I havnt had regular periods and for the past three weeks I have been experiencing sever pain in my lower back right at the very bottom on my tail bone . I have also been urinating over ten times a day and have a tingling pressure on my bladder. I've been on uti antibiotic even though urine and blood tests came back neg for any infection . I don't want to keep taking medicine I feel I don't need it doesn't burn while I urinate and I don't have other symptoms of a uti . I have scheduled a pelvic sonogram this week to check on my cysts . I am afraid of cancer of any kind and how will they rule that out . What can I take besides birth control to prevent cysts.

Cysts are most common in women in their 20-30's... (But they do happen at any stage of life).
Your symptoms are classic cyst... but what also makes me wonder more is that you said you had heavy periods with nausea and severe cramping. Those things can also be symptoms of endometriosis.
Everyone here is right.... get another doc, preferably a gyn or a gyn/onc.
It's your health and you have every right to dictate your care!

Thank you!  At least now I feel like I'm not nuts!  I am not sure if all of my symptoms are related or not...but I had them and told my Quack about them before I even knew I had a cyst. I can live with vertigo and frequent urination, as long as the pain goes away!
I am seeing another doctor on Monday.  Unfortunately, I think that his specialty is more musculo-skeletal, but I am hoping he can at least rule out the "it's stress" theory and send me to someone else.
I know that it is extremely unlikely that this cyst is cancer, especially since I am only 24...but it still seems like it could be causing the pain...so I'll plow ahead!
Thanks so much...it is great that there is a forum like this of women who have been thru this sort of thing.  Just knowing that I am not crazy makes me feel a lot better.  Thanks again!

Welcome!  Please heed the advice of the ladies and go for a 2nd opinion with a gyn/onc.  They are specialists and have a few more years of training.  They know the female reproductive system inside out:-)  The pain you are feeling is classic ovarian cyst pain.  Also with your family history you would be wise to get that 2nd opinion.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed

I was also having pain (and nauseau) for 6 months.  My regular Dr initially told me it was stress (before he did any tests).  I pushed back and had all the kidney, gallbladder, CAT scan etc tests done.   He saw the cyst but told me that couldn't be the cause of the pain.  He told me it was stress and wanted to prescribe an antidepressant.  I didn't think I was depressed so I went to my Gyn. Turns out it was a small (3.5cm) ovarian cyst.   She also told me that I was having "classic" symptoms of an ovarian cyst and that size can have nothing to do with your level of pain.  She told me that some women live years with fairly large cysts and never know it.  Some have small ones and lots of pain.  I wound up having it removed because I am post-menopausal.   That was 3 weeks ago and I have not had even a twinge of what I used to feel.   My next step is to get a new regular Dr.   I don't trust any Dr. who ignores the physical and goes right to Prozac!   Good luck!

Defo get a second opinion but I have the symptoms you have. Mind you I have suffered from vertigo for about 10 years. Hey just imagine if it had been the cyst all this time lol dont think its been there that long though. Could have been there any length of time however because after the birth of my son 13 years ago 3 weeks ago was the next US I had. I have a painful lymph node under my right armpit. It came up right after my app with gny yesterday another wait in the waiting room for over an hour grrrrr why do they think there time is more valuable than ours. Imagine if we turned up an hour late and demanded to be seen. When I went in I said ah right finished ya tea and biscuits then.

I will say this though I think all of us are now noticing EVERY little twinge and bodily change and attributing it to the cyst. Pain in my finger - cyst, quick get the internt up for cancer check. OH OH big toe looks swollen - cyst, right internet. I would never of noticed a pain in my bl**** armpit before LOL. At the weekend my feet had swollen slightly because it was so hot - normal? no not in my head omg the cyst. We are all going bananas bless us HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I used to have a handle on life then it broke.....

Must be the cyst!

Please seek another opinion. I got the same run around and then I got a good Dr. and she says ovarian cysts hurt just like that. I sure know they used to do that to my daughter. She had her ovaries and uterus removed at a young age due to the pain.

The fact that you have a family history of OV concerns me even more. There is a theory out there that Ovarian cysts don't cause pain unless they ae the size of a watermelon ( always seems to be from someone who hasn't had one or doesn't have ovaries)- second GYN said that to me. Male of course. Three other GYN don't agree - they and most of the women on this board acknowelege that O cysts can be very painful. I can attest to that as well. I have two of them and get some of the worst pain I have ever had, right up there with Labor pains.

DOn't risk your life - get another opinion please. The good news is that most cysts especially in younger women are B9. The bad news is some Dr. don't seem to have a clue about pain or family history. With your history, I cannot stress enough to see another DR. possibly a GYN/Oncologist they are the ones that specialize in this type of problem. My heart goes out to you and my prayers are with you. Love Bea

Hi there, back pain is a common symptom of an ovarian cyst. How long does your doctor want to "watch and wait"? I don't think physical therapy is going to help the back issue. You might want to seek another opinion.

And, by the way, welcome to the group!
