My left foot feels like it's slipping when I walk

I feel like my left foot is slipping like on ice.  I have never gone completely down but have slipped and needed to grab something to make sure I didn’t fall. When it first started (year ago Feb) I have that panicked slipping sensation at least 15 to 20 times a day and was walking like an idiot, baby stepping and watching every step walking with caution. It came on so suddenly I thought I just scared myself the first few times so badly I created a phobia so I went to a Hypnotist (1st time ever) but it was of no help and she thought it was physical.  My PCP acted like he was humoring me, but did refer me to Neurologist who has put me through an expensive battery of test ;   2 MRI’s One brain and one lumbar – Showed few smallest vessel strokes- did not think could cause problem
Nerve test - (Small needles tracking from my toes to my back) said had significant peripheral
myopathy but had no reason and not sure if causing problem. I did have Polio when I was 7 and it was not unusual to have this myopathy.  Physical Therapy – Went 8 weeks twice a week but no matter what I said they focused on  strength and balance and had no idea about slipping correction.
Have a scheduled appointment with Neurosurgeon to read and analyze my MRI, to see if a
couple of possible bulging disc could be causing the problem. I’M DONE I’m not going to put
myself through anymore because every time I’m treated like I’m crazy and get no ANSWERS.
ie: I do take Statins, Blood pressure and cholesterol meds.

*** I’ve found at least 8 medical boards with 100s of threads over several years ALL with the EXACT same symptoms.  I’ve searched for months and not found one single resolution that has helped ANY posters. *** PLEASE if anyone has found a lasting solution, PLEASE share***. These symptoms ARE a lot more common and widespread then any of the doctors I’ve seen or read seem to think, so it must be caused by a common condition that can be treated

I have had this issue for about a year. I do have neuropathy in my neck & arms and take Gabapentin for that. They did an EMG (the needle test) and said they didn't find neuropathy in my legs. Had low back surgery 32 years ago. I have this slipping on ice sensation when I'm walking on surfaces like parking lots, tile floors like at Big Box stores or supermarkets. It's awful & I use a cane in these situations. I have no problem on carpet or grass. Currently I am in physical therapy to strengthen my ankles and hip muscles, which seems to be helping. Also doing exercises for Proprioception. It all seems to be helping, BUT I've discovered Vitamin B12 in the sublingual dose seems to be helping. B12 is for nerve support. Don't just buy the B12 pills because your gastric juices destroy the pill before the B12 is absorbed. Find B12 that says Sub Lingual (under the tongue). Hope this info helps.

I've had the exact same symptoms since July 2018.
I have the SENSATION of my foot slipping on ice as I walk. Coupled with a an off balance sensation veering to the left although I don't move. This can happen every 2 - 5 minutes when walking or 10 or 30 minute intervals. I've Had this for the last 3 1/2 years since July 2018.
I also have sciatica since Sept 2019 and was diagnosed via MRI scan with L5/ S1 a disc herniation (slipped / prolapsed ) causeing impingement of  the traversing right S1 nerve root which presses onto the sciatic nerve inflamming it and causing great pain. I've developed numb right foot through this followed in the last year with my left foot becoming numb both top and sole.
I had nerve studies recently which bear out the MRI report results and showed that was no signs of nerve compression but does show S1 bilateral denervation signs.
My neurologist appears to be no wiser as to the cause of the balance / foot slipping sensation but it is very limiting particularly with the sciatica/disc issue and he really didn't get that I get this when I'm walking and that there is NO visible sign of this so I can't emulate it in a face to face appointment.  He's a professor in his 70s so you would hope he'd be pretty experienced.

I fear falling as I take  anticoagulants and have a limp from the sciatica so feel very vulnerable out walking so I don't do it very often. So depressed at getting nowhere and losing 3 1/2 years of my life in my early 60s.
Like you, I've seen around the same number of posts on these sites but no real answer as it can be a number of things including peripheral neuropathy which can have a number of causes.
Same thing here. I’m 41 now heavier than used to be and was very active even taught at local gym hi intense classes. Diagnosed early teens scoliosis not severe lean to right top curve like when you put backpack on your left shoulder lean to right ya that was me. Later in life sciatic started to act up. Right side did mri low back haven’t seen results in long time but remember hearing them mention T10 and spongy cartilage slowly deteriorating. Pt for a bit all tests always fine present normal can balance and have great strength in legs. No bathroom issues. Did neuropathy needle test passed. MRI of brain passed. Often feel like going to fall when walk. Back of right thigh drives me nuts, back of my calf all day feels like I stood in high heels on tip toes for days beyond sore. Top of right foot in between big toe and next toe tingly my feet are often cold to touch hot days too. I sit all day at desk computer and that’s not good I’ve done all I can too not to mention the constant depression of feeling like this will only keep getting worse I explain in detail to people they say what are you going to do about it ? I’m tired of explaining only to be told nothing wrong wasting my money and my time off at work for dr appointment. I feel crazy, lack of motivation I have massaged, creams pills, socks, tens equipment to help stimulate nerves. Constant dull ache in right leg it’s all I think from time I get up in morning until bed time. Rls sets in compression socks at night felt it helped in beginning but not anymore. Long rant but totally on board with everything everyone has already said.
I was hopeful when I read that B12 might help, but then I remembered my primary care provider telling me last year to lower my B12 intake because my blood test reading for B12 was >2000 pg/mL (standard range is 200 - 1100 pg/mL). Back to square one.

Another thing I have discovered is "desensitizing." You'llhave to Google it, but it loosely means changing the way your foot feels things. One thing I am doing (which might sound weird) is wearing those non-slip gripper socks inside out so the little nubs are in contact with the bottom of my foot. I do still wear my orthotics/insoles too. Strangely, this seems to be helping as it forces my foot to FEEL a connection to the ground as I walk instead of that floaty/slipping feeling. It's worth a try. Good Luck!!

I  too have the same sensations so I am very familiar with it. Along with that I had other issues crop up like arm tingling, speech difficulty at times.  My neurologist immediately sent me for a cervical MRI and it showed severe spinal canal stenosis.  Surgery was immediately scheduled as I had nearly pinched off my cord. Ultimately even with a second surgery, I have permanent damage.  I hope this has helped if you haven’t gotten resolution.

Try taking Vitamin E. If you have a gut problem you may not be absorbing enough. I t almost completely fixed my slipping sensation but it returns if I stop taking E fir a few weeks. Worth trying.

It’s called a Balance Disorder. It can happen while walking or in my case even when I stand still. Read about it on the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

I have the same sensation in my feet. It feels like I'm sliding on ice and about to fall over. I have Cervical Dystonia and my neck spasms and my head shakes from it. As far as the foot problem, I recently went to a doctor who treats Neuropathy and she said I'm not eating enough, which is true. She also recommended that I get a lot of the vitamin B's, like B12 and B6 which will help the nerves. I've been getting this feeling in my feet, especially the left one for about 3 months and feel like I'm going crazy! I just purchased a bunch of Vitamin B12, B1 and B6, so keep my fingers crossed that it will work.

I hope you are feeling better by now and got an answer to your problem. Just knowing that I'm not alone in this makes me feel better.

I have had this issue for roughly 5 years now and never gotten an answer. Been tested ( they even thought it was diabetes caused  - nope) and still no answer. I do patrols while walking for my job and it makes it really hard to walk the 2.5 miles when I am feeling like I am going to fall every few steps.  This even occurs on carpeting so I KNOW it's not my slipping but it feels like I am.  And', like others especially the OP, I get doctors looking at me like I am making it up. or crazy.

It's not bad enough I have Fibromylagia which a lot of doctors still do not take seriously.  Plus my arthritis in both knees and cervical stenosis.

Just so tired of not having answers.

Did anyone ever get any answers as to why they get the slipping feeling on bottom of feet? Doctors still look at me like I'm crazy and say it's not a symptom of neuropathy. I have pain and burning, but no numbness or pins & needles sensation. All I keep getting is Physical therapy to supposedly strengthen my ankles. I miss powerwalking and running. I feel like screaming
I still have same problem. I'm taking a previous suggestion and started 5000mg B12 liquid a week ago
@beckyjac01 Please keep us updated as to whether the B12 liquid works. Is it an injection or an over-the-counter liquid? I was told by my doctor that my blood work last year showed my B12 was too high. I have a referral to a neurologist, but have hesitated going for fear I won't get any solution to my "slipping" foot.

Did you ever get a diagnosis or any help? I have the same symptom and neurologist is sending me for more tests but has no answer so far. It's scaring me and getting worse. Thanks for any help you can give.

I had the same problem, pretty severe, seems I have one leg shorter than the other. It was discovered by my physical therapist and confirmed by my orthopedic Dr. A lift was added to the inside of my shoe for the shorter leg, symptoms gone.

Did you find out anything?  I just started with the same symptoms this week.  At first I thought there was oil on the garage floor.  But then it happened walking into a restaurant.  Was just wondering if a diagnosis was made before I make a doctor appt.
I have the same thing, feels like left foot is slipping on ice or water on the floor and there is not.
I too have had this problem. Sense of slipping then panic With heart racing. Took months to resolve. I found I could walk better on carpet or grass. Worse on hard surfaces with shiny floors. After hospitalization and every test known to the medical world my ENT thinks it may have been a virus that affected the vestibular nerve.
I've had the exact same symptoms since July 2018.

I, too, keep experiencing this. I have been working on losing weight since March of this year and along with calorie counting, I have been walking 10,000+ steps or 4-6 miles a day. About a month ago this slipping feeling started in my right foot. I suffer from a bad tendon in left foot which causes overpronation in it. My right foot suffers some nerve damage due to a bad break 6 years ago. I’m going to try a couple of the suggestions on here about increasing B vitamins and wear nubby socks inside out. If any of this works, I will definitely post.

I read about this (and I have it) but can’t find the info again. If you have a gut problem - I do - you may not be absorbing enough Vitsmin E. Advised to take Vira E supplement with fat containing food to aid absobstiin. This has largely prevented my problem. If returns if I stop taking E for a few weeks. I’m pretty confident the advise was good. Just wish I could find it sgsin. It was in a discussion board.

Interesting. My doctor is suggesting that my gut health needs to be addressed!
Oh look - do try vitamin E. I was really struggling as when the sensation happened I would react as if  I had slipped  which initself is a problem. Throwing my body back. It felt so real!

I thought I was going nuts. I think this just started for me a couple weeks ago. I started feeling like I was slipping at work (concrete floor), but I was always fine on carpet so I ignored it till a week later I had an anxiety attack and sent to ER and was told it was my blood sugars. Decided to see dr and he gave me pills for vertigo. Only knocked me out. Work has a lot of “slippery floors” so I can’t go back till I have a solution or a way to manage. Thinking of getting a cane (I’d prefer not as I’m only 44, but anything to get back to work). Does anyone else use a cane and it works?

I have no nerve disorders, never had Polio, and I have no health problems that could account for this odd disorder.  I have noticed that it bothers me on ice (of course), tile floors, puddles (or even wet floors), and on a decline (like going down stairs or walking downhill).   And it's always the left foot.  Been through all the testing, nothing found.  I walk a lot and didn't want to stop, so I have begun occasionally stamping my left foot before I put it down.   I do it enough so that my brain can "hear" me telling it that I am NOT slipping!   It has seemed to help - worth a try?
I feel like it must be similar to peripheral neuropathy. So you aren't on any heart or diabetes medication then? I think we should somehow keep track of the things we all have in common!
No heart or Diabetes medications.  Doctor said it wasn't peripheral neuropathy.  I feel like it must be some kind of brain disorder
Wow! Did you try the B12 yet? My Dr said that blood levels for B12 aren't very reliable. I started weeky injections 2 weeks ago but it may take awhile to work.
I’m on 4,000 mg of B12 and added a shoe insert. Nothing helps.
How !ong have you been on the B12?
Vitamin E! See my comments elsewhere on this thread. It has helped me enormously.

I saw that you started B12.  You'll have to tell me how you feel after taking that.  I started it and stopped.  I couldn't tell if it agitated me which would be weird but I WAS agitated when taking it.  Believe it or not, I DO take losartan.  I started two years ago.  I have an issue and it's usually one leg that all of a sudden I can't feel great and I stumble most often going up stairs.  Haven't fallen yet, thank goodness, but it's strange.  I'm not old. I had assumed it was weight gain and a bit of arthritis in that knee.
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/drugs-losartan-side-effects#mild-side-effects     Who knew.  After reading your post, I see that these types of issues ARE on the side effect list.  Not as common but that they happen.  My blood pressure is controlled which could kill me if it's not so that leaves me in a bind.

This response has a potential solution to this problem.

I exhibited all the same symptoms as described by many of the responses here. It started a week ago and I lost all confidence in my left foot - specially when transitioning from carpet to cement or wood. Or from dry cement to wet cement.  The sensation would occur multiple times a day.

I took Methyl B12 shot, and it completely alleviated the problem.  There are various places in major cities in the US where you can get a shot for $40 to $50. Taking the pills are not as effective as an injection. It appears there are also sites that provide you the information and Methyl B12 to give yourself the shot. You can also ask your doctor for a B12 shot.

Hello. Welcome. I'm glad you found something that has helped and certainly a B12 deficiency can cause many symptoms.  This is from the Cleveland clinic and is a list of B12 deficiency symptoms and it does include some neurological issues. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22831-vitamin-b12-deficiency  However, we probably shouldn't tell people to ask their doctor for injections or to treat themselves but to ask their doctor about it to get blood work and find the best course of action for themselves. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I have the exact same thing happen, and sorry to say I have no answer. I power walk on pavement and this odd "slipping" started a few months ago. The first time it happened I stopped, slid my foot on the pavement to check for iciness, but I knew it wasn't icy. (I wouldn't walk if it was icy.) I walk two miles and this is now happening during every walk, at least a few times during each walk. I keep saying to myself "it's not slippery." This is the weirdest thing and I am baffled. I'm pretty sure it's usually my left foot that "slips." A search of "phantom slipping while walking" brought me here. I haven't brought this up with my doctor yet, but I will. I am 64 years old and in pretty good shape.

I had the slipping sensation that progressively became more frequent.  By the time I got to a neurologist (I ignored multiple symptoms because I had no pain), I had severe cervical spinal stenosis, which was so severe that I became an emergency type patient.  Further, even with fusions c3-t1 and decompression l3-s1, I still have many sensations I originally had.  I am told I was so far gone by the time I had first operation that I have permanent nerve damage stemming fron the cervical issues.  I suppose my point is, having had multiple MRIs from brain all the way down spine, and nerve testing, push neurologist to check cervical spine.  And I have imbalance issues as well, and PT really focused on strength and core things because that's what will help you right yourself when you're feeling unstable.

I've have had the slipping, burning and buzzing in my left foot for about a year and now it's traveled to the right foot. I tried physical therapy but it did nothing. I went to a new neurologist and had blood work and an EMG. Now he wants me to have and MRI of my brain, lumbar and T spine and a bone scan. I can't afford all that. Plus it's been over 3 weeks and they still don't have the results of my blood test!!! And to top it off, he starts talking about politics in the waiting room!! I'm furious and have an appointment with a new Neurologist but not until October. By the middle of the day, I need to walk with a walker so I don't fall over. Maybe it would be better to go to the ER. Any thoughts?
It sounds like you may have drop foot. I have it due to my neurologist waited too long on my back surgery. I had a major operation with  fusion on my L3-4 . I have had a 4 level cervical fusion which was not the cause of my drop foot. If you are having a problem lifting your foot or you have to lift your led slightly by your knee then I think that is what it is. Good news is there are braces that help
