Long painful history was just recommended a partial hysterectomy
Hello, I am 31 years old at the end of the month. Few days ago I met with my new OBGYN and she recommended a partial hysterectomy, leave both ovaries but take everything else. Suspected endo and ando (sp),have fibroids in my uterus, right ovary and fallopian tube swell often, consistent constant pain and excruciating pain at times. Periods can be light to heavy lasting from 7 to 30 days. Ive been in an uphill battle for over 15 years to try and figure out what to do to have a normal active life. Well the doctor seems to believe by eliminating the cause of some issues I could gain some life back. I don't know what to expect before or after, we were taking (appointment was a half hour we were on our second hour) when an emergency came in and she was called. I know there is no cure but the chance this could help a little seems like a good chance I'll take. I have no desire to have children of my own, I've always said if children were ment to be in my home I would love to adopt older children who have been lost in the system. They need homes desperately. So I don't have any issues with the removal I'm scared of after. How does one heal? What if my ovaries are not enough for hormones? Pros and cons? I'm sorry you're suffering so much! Have you already tried various hormonal (birth control) options (pills, shots, IUD)? Have you tried non-hormonal Rx Lysteda that you take only when you're bleeding? (Not sure this would be an option in your case but something you may want to check into.)
Hysterectomy is a destructive surgery. It's concerning that any doctor would recommend a hysterectomy without a definitive diagnosis. Plus, as you said, if you do have endo, hysterectomy is not a cure. Have you considered seeing an endometriosis specialist to check for endo (via surgery with biopsy) and remove as much as possible without removing any organs?
Hysterectomy displaces the bladder, bowel and vagina causing dysfunction. It also alters the figure and causes back and hip problems in the long term because the uterine ligaments are the pelvis' support structures. The spine will compress, hips widen and rib cage drop giving you the protruding belly and loss of waist / curve in lower back. And yes, your ovaries may not produce enough hormones (and may shut down completely) once the uterus is removed. The loss of these hormones is associated with accelerated aging and 18 chronic health conditions. Last but not least, many women report a loss of sexual function - desire and ability to orgasm after hysterectomy, ovary removal or not.
The prevalence of hysterectomy leads women to think it's a benign surgery but women's experiences on various forums says otherwise. Since 90% of these surgeries are unnecessary / elective, this option may be recommended by other gynecologists.
I wish I'd known all this before I was rushed into having a hysterectomy 11 years ago.

Thank you so much for the insight!!! I've tried everything besides an IUD due the the risk of it embedding inside me or an allergic reaction. Doctors never wanted me to have one. I've had surgery before but no definitive answer the doctor came out said "didn't see any black spots but had to take her appendix" and left it at that. This doctor is the closest to a specialist I can get to. I live so far away for anywhere and traveling is impossible. We spoke how this won't stop endo from gowning which I've known for years, She is thinking with the removal I might not have so much pain due to constant contractions and my periods. I was told 15 years ago I would have this done when I was 30. I'll be 31 soon so it's all hitting me. I'm sorry you were rushed. I am glad I found this place to ask. I just want all angels....
