Node swelling with Acute Retroviral Syndrome occurs body wide and without pain. Only a doctor can confirm node swelling...and that's even difficult for them sometimes. A one time exposure is unlikely to result in an infection, but can happen. The estimated risk for unprotected vaginal sex for a male is 1 in 2,000 chance. That's a 0.05% chance per act with a known HIV carrier. However, don't play the odds because they are just numbers, but they do give an indication of the level of risk for this one time event. Just get the testing done (3 month mark) and I bet you will be happy with the results. Overall, your risk was relatively low from this one time event, however, like I said before, it's better safe than sorry...I certainly believe you will be ok.
i forgot to mention my underarms had some swelling on the third week but could not feel any lumps it could have been muscle damage as i was working with some heavy equipment? thanks for the reply you've rally helped! I still feel pain were my lymph nodes are all over is this a symptom of hiv infection?
How common is a one time exposure with a normally healthy male having vaginal intercourse are there any known case?
thanks
Al
Your symptoms do not suggest HIV. Node swelling with HIV is not painfull, 96% of people with ARS have a fever of 101+ for a week or two and your symptoms in general came on a bit too early. However, you did put yourself at risk, so I would test at the 3 month mark to be sure. Don't spend your time worrying though because most people do not get an HIV infection from a one time exposure, but it can happen, so do the testing. If you have sex with your wife then use protection EVERY single time until you know your status. The chance you caught HIV is relatively low (like 1 in 2000 chance) but it's better safe than sorry...hope this helps.
seems like you have been reading on symptoms best thing for you to do is test at 3 months post exposure remember symptoms are not a valid indicator for hiv
