scared

hi

im a married man with 2 lovely kids. Last year on a buisness trip i got drunk and had unprotected vaginal sex with a woman i was told had an hiv partner (found out later). I had some really scary symptoms afterwards.
1. first week i had a really dull painfull upper back pain and thrush on my penis, cleared up same week.
2. Facial night sweats second week although had been drinking quite heavily and very anxious
3. third weak had poor or weak feeling, muscle spasms all over and creaky joints all over, same week internal bone pain(if thats the word) cleared up same week.
4. fourth week thought i had swollen glands on my jaw but cant be sure
5. I still think i can feel every sore node on my body?

I did not have any fever, rash , sore throat or any sympton that occured hours or even a couple of days from one another they took at least a week to come on me. is it possible its stress? I was moving home at the time, cheated on my wife for the first time, stressfull job and a handfull of kids!!!!

Do i merit testing? I ahve avoided sex with my wife and im going nuts!
Please advise
Al

Node swelling with Acute Retroviral Syndrome occurs body wide and without pain. Only a doctor can confirm node swelling...and that's even difficult for them sometimes. A one time exposure is unlikely to result in an infection, but can happen. The estimated risk for unprotected vaginal sex for a male is 1 in 2,000 chance. That's a 0.05% chance per act with a known HIV carrier. However, don't play the odds because they are just numbers, but they do give an indication of the level of risk for this one time event. Just get the testing done (3 month mark) and I bet you will be happy with the results. Overall, your risk was relatively low from this one time event, however, like I said before, it's better safe than sorry...I certainly believe you will be ok.

i forgot to mention my underarms had some swelling on the third week but could not feel any lumps it could have been muscle damage as i was working with some heavy equipment? thanks for the reply you've rally helped! I still feel pain were my lymph nodes are all over is this a symptom of hiv infection?

How common is a one time exposure with a normally healthy male having vaginal intercourse are there any known case?

thanks
Al

Your symptoms do not suggest HIV. Node swelling with HIV is not painfull, 96% of people with ARS have a fever of 101+ for a week or two and your symptoms in general came on a bit too early. However, you did put yourself at risk, so I would test at the 3 month mark to be sure. Don't spend your time worrying though because most people do not get an HIV infection from a one time exposure, but it can happen, so do the testing. If you have sex with your wife then use protection EVERY single time until you know your status. The chance you caught HIV is relatively low (like 1 in 2000 chance) but it's better safe than sorry...hope this helps.

seems like you have been reading on symptoms best thing for you to do is test at 3 months post exposure remember symptoms are not a valid indicator for hiv
