Diaphram

Hello I'm Nicky,
I had surgey 1 year ago and I had a tumor removed from my chest, since then I have dificulty breathing. I now have a elevated diaphram. I had no problems with my diaphram before my surgey. Now I cant even walk with out running out of breath. My doctor says that i have anxieties. He says the diaphram has nothing to do with my shortness of breath. But I know I had no problems breathing before. Does anybody else have similar problems.

We found out that my son at the age of 19 months had a paralyzed diaphragm.  We do not know how he got this condition.  We go for a yearly appointment to make sure that everything is still the same.  The only reason we found out is because he had a chest x-ray when he had pneumonia.  He is a very healthy and active 5 year old.  He doesn't show any signs of getting out of breath or being tired.  He loves to jump all over the furniture and he is very physical.  I hope that when he gets older that he continues to get stronger.  Last year we were told that he developed blood vessels on the non-functioning lung that has helped to slightly heal itself.  At our last visit we were told that the lung looks a slight deflated.  The doctor is unsure if this is because he didn't take a big enough breath.  At this point in time the doctor doesn't want to do anything.  As a parent you just want your child to be happy and healthy.

It sounds like you have a paralyzed diaphragm  due injury to the phrenic nerve which can happen after surgery in the chest. Most people don't have shortness of breath with just one sided involvement of the diaphragm but some do and it sounds like you do! I don't think that this is solely anxieties but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some anxiety due to having problems with breathing. I would ask for more diagnostics, even lung function tests...one set while sitting up, another while lying down to see if there are changes in your volumes. I would seek out another pulmo if he doesn't take you seriously. There are treatments out there for those who have severe shortness of breath with unilateral paralysis. I hope you get somewhere soon...Sunny
