Endometriosis: Get the Facts

When Surgery is Necessary

When Surgery is Necessary

If drugs don't shrink the pain-causing cells, called endometrial lesions, then surgically removing them may be your only option. Depending on the number and size of the lesions, you may be able to have a procedure called endometrial ablation which uses laser heat to remove lesions from the affected areas only, leaving the rest of the uterus intact. But if the disease is too advanced, you may need a hysterectomy. The percentage of women who need a full hysterectomy is small; often a partial hysterectomy will suffice.
