ductogram or ductal lavage for bloody discharge?

I have had a white opaque discharge upon squeezing either breast for many years. I check it occasionally (by squeezing). A few weeks ago dark blood came out of one duct in one breast upon squeezing. This continued for about 3 weeks, then stopped. I'm offered a choice of ductal lavage, total ductectomy, or ductogram and then removal of the duct with (hopefully) the papilloma. I don't want a total ductectomy unless absolutely necessary. What would you advise?
Thanks,
Loba

I have had a dark brown discharge from my right breast 8 times over the last 3 months. I am having a ductogram soon. Does the technician need to express blood on the day of the procedure in order to do the ductogram?

Dear Loba: Ductal lavage may be your best first option.  This procedure is designed to examine the cells within the duct.  Hopefully, it would provide the data needed to determine if a ductectomy would be necessary and/or what other screening procedures should be done.
