Ongoing Stomach Problems...

I'm 22/f & for at least the past 10 yrs I've had a "sensitive stomach."  Over the past 5 yrs or so I've been going through bouts of a week or two where I'm terribly nauseated no matter what I eat, and have intermittant diarrhea, but it always clears up.  I've been to my GP about it & his opinions were: 1. "That's too bad, some people have sensitive stomachs" and 2. "Try a bland diet for a few days. It's just a virus."

Well, now this "virus" has been going on for 2-3 months.  If I eat a full meal I get severe abdominal cramps for hours on end and diarrhea.  Put about 8 oz food/drink in my stomach at one time, but anything more I feel horrible, & even that is too much a lot of the time.  I'm living off of crackers, plain pasta, white rice, that sort of thing, & even that has resulted in diarrhea.  I've lost 5 lbs this month.  I'm so frustrated.  I can't eat if I have to go to work or go out because if I do I can't make it through the day, as a result I'm weak and tired all the time.  I'm becoming agoraphobic because I never know when my stomach is going to freak out.  I am getting some tests done through a gastroenterologist next week, an abdominal ultrasound, bloodwork, a stool study, and an abdomnial CT (which concerns me due to my inability to fill my stomach.. i don't know how i'll drink barium).  Things I've taken include: immodium, pepcid, pepto bismol, rolaids, titrilac, di-gels... NOTHING helps.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be or anything I can try to make my life bearable?

Feel free to vent here at anytime, that is what we are all here for. Colon cancer is not an easy thing to deal with but it is surviveable. I wish you all of the best. Some GASTRIC REFLUX TIPS (without acid blockers):

GER=Gastro-Esophageal Reflux. (Gastro=stomach. Esophagus=food tube.)

LPR= Laryngeal-Pharyngeal Reflux. (Larynx=voice box, containing the 2 vocal cords. Pharynx=throat, above the larynx. The larynx is above the trachea/windpipe.)

Reflux=acidic or alkaline stomach material that backs up into the esophagus (food tube), causing any of these problems: VCD attacks, cough, voice problems, asthma, globus (feeling of lump in throat), constant need to clear throat, worsening of sinus condition, sore throat, pre-cancerous conditions of throat &/or esophagus, etc.

SOME GER/LPR CONTROL THINGS WE DO, that we learned from the excellent book: STOMACH AILMENTS AND DIGESTIVE DISTURBANCES, by Michael T. Murray, N.D. See page 9, References, in my website: http://cantbreathesuspectvcd.com   and, also see GER/LPR info on page 5, and on LINKS page.

PLEASE READ THIS GREAT BOOK. It may possibly be bought on-line, from Michael T. Murray

Hello everyone, I am new here and am glad I found this. At least I know I am in good company with this pain.
My problems started in 1988, I had my appendix taken out. Did really well after that, only had one pain shot and went to pills which didn't last but a day. I thought at 18 years old, I had the world by the tail and would bounce back like a champ. Boy how dumb I was.
12 days after coming home, I started getting strange pain, it would go from the center of my back to my belly button at which point I would throw up. After 3 days of this, my parents finally took me to the doctor who took out my appendix. He admitted me to the hospital as I was dehydrated.
Was never so happy to be in the hospital, cause every 4 hrs I was sure to get pain shot to take me away. Doctor stopped this to see how long I could go without, made it 1 1/2 hrs.
He finally figured out I had adhesions and needed surgery like yesterday. Put an NG tube in my nose ( which this girl was not at all happy about and fought them but good) and the next day I went in. They had to reconstruct my bowels. I felt as if I had died when I woke, it hurt so bad.
I went in at 155 pounds and after 12 days in hospital I came out at 100 pounds. Great diet plan huh?
About 4 months later the pain started again and I was rushed back to hospital for another 12 day stay at this point nothing was found and Doctor said it was IBS.
So for a little over 14 years now, I have been passed from doctor to doctor and have been able to see many ER rooms, bet I have built some new wings for some of the hospitals ha ha.
I have tried to tell them I didn't think IBS is the problem. From what I have read on it, it isn't a constant pain and isn't localized which I can localize this pain to the upper left side under ribs and on right side under ribs. Which if you touch it, I am wanting to rip your head off, cause it is that strong of pain.
Usually it isn't this sharp 100% of the time, but is dull and constant. When it starts to get major pain, it will wake me out of a dead sleep and takes my breath away. I have had test after test and now it is to the point when I am rushed to the ER all they do is give me a shot and send me home with a $500.00 bill from the golden needle. This is because IBS has been what the doctors say and each one after just continues with it.
When the IBS acts up it isn't in the upper part, it is lower and isn't localized but all over and once I soak it eases up to let me sleep and I can deal with it. This pain under ribs, I can not deal with as it is sharp and can knock me off my feet and no amount of soaking is going to help.
The pain has been so strong I beg to be shot, cause I can't take it.
Sorry to ramble but I am so tired, pain is my constant companion. I am going on 32 ( in 5 days) and I feel as if my life is over as I can't plan anything and the pain won't allow me to enjoy life any more.

After suffering a couple of TIA's I now have a lot of stomach problems, my Doctor believes it is the aspirin I have to take, now I have been diagnosed with H.Pylori! the medication is upsetting me, It's called HeliClear, I take 60mg of Lansoprazole,
2gm of Amoxycillin and 1gm of Clarithromycin a day, is there anything I can do to help myself rather than take this stuff, because I dont know what I have or what I am taking.

ask about a gastric emptying test; this will show if you have a stomach motility disorder; your stomach does not empty properly because the stomach muscles are not working properly. this would explain some of your symptoms.

Have you been diagnosed with colon cancer?  If yes, it all depends on the stage of the cancer.  If it is not too advanced, it is treatable.  I know several people who had colon cancer and are doing fine.

Dear Rabdi,

I agree with all the comments and advice the others gave you!

Also, have you checked out the possibility of Celiac Disease(CD)? If you have this gluten intolerance, you would need to avoid all foods that contain gluten. You can try going on a gluten-free diet for a few weeks, to see if you have improvement.

This means AVOID: wheat, rye, oats, barley, and buckwheat. Brown rice is gluten free. Corn is gluten-free, but is very "allergenic", so avoid, for a while. Millet is tolerated by some Celiac patients, but not by others. Some people find that avoiding all grains for a while can be helpful.

Are you possibly LACTOSE (milk sugar) INTOLERANT? If yes, eating milk products (containing milk-sugar/lactose) can cause some of your symptoms. Taking the digestive enzyme Lactase can help.

Might you have an ulcer? (can also cause some of your symptoms)

Do you possibly have any gastric reflux? MINT can aggravate gastric reflux! Avoid mints! (The one exception to this, is some sort of "enteric" coated mint, that doesn't "release" until past the stomach. Mint in the stomach can cause a reflux episode.)

Might you have a hiatal hernia?

Any gall bladder problems? Liver problems?

Follow Reb's advice about the "pro-biotics". The gentlest formula for the pro-biotics (found in health food stores) is a milk-free preparation of Bifidus infantum, with only "rice maltodextrin" mixed with the (refrigerated) powder.

Have you been taking any antibiotics? If yes, you might have a yeast infection, which the probiotics can help to cure.

By the way, some virus infections can CAUSE gastric reflux!

It's good that you will have some tests to help figure out what you have.

I'll post some gastric reflux tips, as an additional message, that can give you some food for thought.

Sincerely, Concerned lady

What makes you say something like that? Have you had a colonoscopy done? How old are you?

Tried eliminating all dairy and all wheat products from my diet (not at the same time).  Neither made a difference.  Bizarrely, milkfat is the only kind of fat that really doesn't bother me much.  (well, no more than any other food i eat. lol)  I thought with reflux i needed some sort of heartburn problem?  Through all this I had heartburn once (following a half bowl of rice and vegetable broth.. slept sitting up that night).

I guess we'll see if the doctors come up with anything, but honestly, i'm pretty skeptical.  I seem to only ever have doctors who are really awful.  My GP denied to gastroenterologist my medical records, and said he would NOT give me a referral to go see one, and that was final.  Thanks, friendly doctor, but I don't need referrals with my insurance plan!  grr.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.  I hope I get some answers next week...

Try probiotics (good bacteria for the gut available from health food shops). I tried all sorts of "traditional" medicines and nothing helped, so I tried probiotics- it worked. "Concerned lady" also has some excellent suggestions on this site- look for her posts for more suggestions!

I've tried probiotics.  I took acidophilis religiously for a while and it did nothing. I've tried tummy teas and crystallized ginger and coca cola, peppermints, crushed ice, ice pops.. you name it.. I've tried everything I (and everyone I know) could think of.
