The Best Time for Your Health

When to: Weigh Yourself

When to: Weigh Yourself

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, in the buck and after going to the bathroom. Weighing yourself regularly is a tried-and-true trick of big losers: 75 percent of members of the National Weight Control Registry — men and women who have lost an average of 66 pounds and kept it off for an average of 5 years and counting — hop on a scale at least once a week.

In one study, dieters who weighed themselves daily lost twice as much weight as scale-avoiders (12 pounds compared to 6 pounds). Weighing yourself in the morning normalizes the many factors that can cause your weight to fluctuate by as much as 5 to 10 pounds over the course of a day — getting dressed, eating and drinking, sweating, going to the bathroom and even breathing can affect your weight.
