I can't believe that your son doesn't have a 504. That would help him a lot as it forces the teacher and school to follow certain guidelines. I think you should buy the book, "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley. It not only gives you information on 504's and IEP's, but will give you a lot of useful ideas for working with him.
By the way, many kids with ADHD are very intelligent. That has nothing to do with the other problems they are having. The very brightest can do well up to (maybe through) high school. Typically, things like pre algebra in 7th grade or common denominators earlier will trip them up depending on the intelligence level. Its the inability to concentrate which is needed for these abstract subjects that is the problem. Best wishes.
I am in the same boat as you. My 8yr old son was diagnosed with adhd and his teacher seems to not want to wrk with him at all. Although the school tells me they r wrking with him, I recently started having his days at school video tapped to see his behavior only to see him be completely ignored and only then does he begin to act out. He calls out sometimes and doesn't want to do his wrk at times but his education level is well above normal. He is in 2nd grade and now becuz he has been suspended for the 8th time with a recamendation for expolsion "for not doing all his wrk" I have been doing 3rd and 4th grade level wrk with him at home and he has no problem with it. I feel the school doesn't want to deal with him so they pick at every little thing he does. If he yawns loud they send him to the office and at the point he is now upset and mad that he was sent to the office and doesn't want to do the wrk they give him so they suspend him. Needless to say they have been trying to push meds on me for him and I dnt want that. He does just fine at home...normal 8yr old to me...talks back at tmes little hyper....but he is being transfered to a different school for next yr and I plan on home schooling until then. He will not be going back to that school. Even if it is just your child being suspended it could still be the teacher sometimes they have their picks...trust me I know from experience. Good luck
It may be that the School's staff may not know how or want to deal with an over active child. I went thru that with my son, I received phone calls a half hour after I would drop him off in the morning. I don't know what state your in but most states have wrap around services that come to the home and school.
talk to his pediatrician about this and get a referral to a developmental pediatrician for evaluation. 8 times means that something is wrong and he needs YOUR help.
Why has he been Suspended 8 times? The statement alone doesn't give enough information.
Is your child on an IEP or 504? Does he have a suspected leaning disability? What is he being suspended for? Has the school done a functional behavior analysis? If they haven't put your request in writing. Is this behavior a manifestation of his disability?
Depending on the state you are in - there are a maximum amount of times that a child can be suspended. It is very unusual for a child to be suspended in Kindergarten. Much more usual as they get older. Either you have a teacher who has no clue how to deal with kids which means that things will get better next year. Or your son has trouble dealing with the public school system which will get worse for him next year. I would definitely try and figure out what the problem is. Actually the school has to help you do this (if you want them to). So - in a nutshell - either the problem will get better with a new teacher or worse. You really should check out both possibilities. One way is to talk to parents and see if their kids have been suspended. If several (at the kindergarten level even two kids being suspended is a bit unusual) have been, then perhaps its the teacher. If its only your child, then that is something that you need to start getting professional help with. Good luck.
