Pain pills and aggressiveness

I have a live-in boyfriend that recently had back surgery. I do understand that there is much pain. He has abused pills since he was 15; he is now 28.  He was sober for almost a year when his back went out. Now, he is on Xanax, Norco, and Soma. He abuses them all, especially the soma. his doctor was giving him 120 pills, which would only last him about 4 days. I personally asked the dr to cut him off, and I was told he would. Now, he can fill a 3 day script for 20 pills - every 3 days. These pills are gone in 24 hours. With xanax, he gets aggressive and wants to fight and break things. norco just gets him "lit."  Last night, I caught him trying to shoot up Adderral, but I destroyed it.  How do spouses/partners deal with this?  I love him, and there are many times where he gets upset because he is trying so hard to stay sober, so I know he wants to be.  He can't work until his back heals, which he claims is the reason he abuses.  Can anyone offer me any help?  Please...

He needs help ,you cannot help him alone, you tell him you will not stay unless he does go to get treatment as he seriously has a problem,if you dont you are enabling his problem, the fact as you say he gets aggressive means he is out of control. Speak seriously to him, tell him he needs help to get through this issue., and mean it if he doesnt you have to remove your self so he knows you mean it, then if he does care for you he will get that help. That is all you can do...Good Luck
