Pot laws in U.S???

is it true that in the u.s, you can get charged for having a joint on you??? although pot is not legal here in canada, 99% of times you do not get charged for carrying around even a half ounze, only if you are selling. im asking this cause ive heard a couple stories that people had to go to court over a couple joints and were charged, which in only my opinion is ridiculous. ive also seen the show cops and many times they seem harder on someone with a joint than crack, i don't know, just an observation, but i could be way off.  are the pot laws in the u.s this strict???

Here's a story that will make you laugh- or cry. My son smokes cigarettes and at one time started rolling his own for money reasons. He, I and my daughter were sitting under a shade tree in my front yard one summer afternoon and he smoked one of his creations. We went inside for lemonade and the next thing I know the local police are at my door demanding to see the "three kids" that were smoking pot in my front yard. I told them that my children and I had been sitting out front  but I had no idea what they were talking about.  My kids came to the door and were asked to step outside. My son then produced his pouch of American Spirit and his rolling papers. Did the cops apologize? Nope. Lectured my son re "probable cause" and told him that if he continued to smake hand rolled cigarettes he could expect to be stopped and searched. before they left they  scouried my front lawn picking up a few pieces of cellophane, cigarette butts etc and sniffing them!
Yeah. They will ruin your life in MD over a crumb of pot... fricken police state and the ignorant town clowns love to intimidate and throw their weight around.

Here in Minnesota they will nail you if you have just paraphenalia.  They also fine you for not having a "drug stamp".  How many people are going to go and say i smoke pot and would like a drug stamp. Not sure there is even an actual stamp but it adds to the fine.  Oh they bring in every outside agency around here if they find something but we have child molesters living right across the school.  They cant be within 500 ft of the school.  Doesnt make any sense to me at all.  Elderly people are getting beat up, children are being molested and so on but lets chase the pot down.  Insane.

my Dr. told me to use it for my migraines, but was always scared to try or even get it, sure it would help better than the meds I take, but who wants to take the chance...a prescription here means nothing, you will go to jail regardless.

As a life long resident of Cali I must say I'm shocked... With so much evil in the world they would waste their time on weed is to me a crime in it's self.... They have been using this herb as far back as the Egyptians and further .. Its all about the money.. The Gov has not figured out how to tax it and make it legal without making other opiates legal.. 3 of my friends last april were busted with just 0.6 grams of weed in the car. all got sent to jail for the night. cops will chase you threw a meth lab for a joint it seems like.

I live in Washington D.C Metro area......I knew a guy who got busted with a quater of weed Maybe a little more.....19 years old and they thre the book at him....One thing led to another and he was fighting for his life in a Prince Georges County jail....Really hurts a guy while protecting himself....Ends up in prison and has horrible things happen......Life over....

A bright happy kid a great guy who had lots of morals and his life was destroyed over a plant.....

This is not the avarage story of weed in the U.S....But it did happen.....I was busted once with weed and let me tell you after the weekend in jail and all the court ordered substance abuse classes and communty service....I never carried it again......

O.k. here's my thoughts, were I live and when I lived in Indiana, you could go to court for a joint of small amount, which I think is ridiculuos, I mean come on people, spend you time looking for the rapist and murders, hardened criminals that have really done something, don't fill up the jails with pot smokers. I'm talking about not the dealers but people who have small amounts for their own personal use.  There are more accidents with fatality's from alcohol then pot. I think they should legalize, tax it like cigarettes and get on with life. leave the little man alone. I know, but I have never smoked pot but have friends and family members who did and still do but I have never seen a person high on pot mad have you? did mean to offend anyone just my thoughts of the whole thing...Think of the economy if they taxed pot, might just get better huh? I know doesn't sound like this is me... but it is...LOL

You know what makes me even madder is the fact that ,they give more jail time to small time things like pot (now i'm not talking growing and manufact) but just a little bag..than to more serious violent crimes....OMG and if you are in a school zone..LOOK out..yeah but they can't get the kids to stop bringing drugs to school to sell them..crazy i tell ya..

thank you Gizzy....why doesn't my state see it that way?? A child molestor can move by a school but if you get caught smoking a joint w/in so many miles of a school you are looking at time... come on!!!! OMG... it's ridiculous!

i agree with your last comment 100%. although selling and trading pot for other drugs like they do here SHOULD  be a crime and felony, but a couple joints to me is not the end of the world.

Well here in Cali it is a little different They are pretty lenient with pot.. My sis has a medicinal so she grows it legally also buys it and hash in the pot shops they even sell clones for growing all legal...They now have pot dispensing machines.. Over a half ounce without a medicinal will get you arrested under a fine or dump it and let it go unless they want to play hard..

Here is my thought.... it's gonna possibly ruffle feathers hopefully not...I would rather see people get a slap on the wrist or just a ticket for their first or second minor pot "offense" like say under 1/2 oz... but there are child molesters running rampant that get more rights than pot smokers!!! WTF??? I would like to see the rapists, molesters, child/woman or man abusers get more court time, jail time etc...then pot smokers! Now, the people who are selling hardcore stuff in a big way that is different....but 1 half smoked joint and you have to pay $300 to get your car out of impound..after they release the "narcotic" hold on it... come on!!!

Gizzy...I live in what's known as the Bible Belt... so it's super strict here but what's funny is our crime is high and our drugs are worse....(not knocking religion by any means I'm a Christian...just explaining to Giz where I come from)

I really am not against "it' (smoking) but yeah..it is a HUGE waste of tax payers $..But trust me , they fine the **** out of you..and years ago they used to have a thing in Ann Arbor ,Mi called the Hash bash..LOL People would come from all over and go to U of M and walk around smoking a J..but the next day...illegal..LOLthats  screwed up!

oh HECK ya..and Michigan is very tough..You might not go to jail the first time but you will be on probation ,paying fines up the a$$ and have to go to classes that cost $250 not to mention that per city ordinance..they can take your car for good!!

here in cincinnati, ohio you are charged big time for even a seed, roach or joint.  if you have over 1 oz its kinda like a felony.  cinti officials are too tough.  heck you cant smoke even a cig in a bar....bullxxxx.  crazy laws

Oh yes you can....for a joint...not that I have...but I smoked enough pot in my days to know...and had enough friends....especially in my state...they will be quick to arrest you for any kind of drugs or any amount!
