Intermittant swelling

The person is a 40 year old female and for some years has has swelling in varous parts of the body (arms, legs, trunk). No obvious reason. Diet, washing powder, clothing, sunlight do not seem to be the trigger. The situation is worstening. Steroids have been prescribed but the symptoms seem to come and go irrespective of this. Sometimes the swelling is so bad the arms or legs cannot be bent, therefore unable to drive when condition arises. Any suggestions please?
