Unilateral suborbital edema?

After lunch yesterday (black bean shrimp), 10 minutes after finishing eating, my under eye area painlessly but instantly swelled to an extreme degree, just the left eye, and only the under eye area. It started from the inner corner outward and the skin was red and firm. Conjuctiva clear.  I took Bendryl, but 12 hours later, it's still inflammed. It's still painless, non-itchy, non-tearing. My mother has a shellfish allergy, as far as I know, I don't.

About two months ago, my upper lip did the same thing a day after eating sushi. I had a duck bill for a day. That experience included severe gastrointestinal symptoms, griping and diarrhea, but this episode did not.  I just had shrimp last week with no problem. WTF?

Regarding your post of December 9, did you get answers? I have just experienced the exact same thing, with never an allergic reaction to shrimp before. I'm on the second day of a swollen eye after eating a shrimp ceviche (delicious, BTW), and I've never, ever had an allergic reaction to fish, shellfish or other food before. My symptoms are the same as yours, with the addition of a feverish feeling along the back of my body.

You could be allergic to either the food products or some ingredients that were used to make the foods at the two occassions.

Do you have any symptoms of food allergy? Are you allergic to any other substances?

Are you on any medications?

It would be advisable to consult an allergy specialist - if you have allergies then you should avoid foods to which you are hypersensitive. In addition, you should take oral antihistamine medications at the time of flare ups.
