dry red sore itchy bumpy under eye skin

Last year I suddenly developed dry skin on the left eyelid and was prescibed hydrocortisone.  Unfortunately it spreaded to the right eyelid the to the bottom of both eyes.  The hydrocrtisone did not work, instead peeled away a little skin.  I continued wearing make up (mac) as my dark circles are very bad.
I went to see an optician who thought it was bletharitis, but I don't think it was.  And I had an allergy test (machine tested me on 3000 products).  I was told that I was allergic to lanolin (sheep wool fat),dust, basil and squid.  I was also told that my boots sensitive mascara did not agree with me.  I am not aware of ever having used lanolin.  I stopped wearing eye make up and only used vaseline around the eyes.
Approx. 2 months later it suddenly vanished, not sure how?  I had put up with the problem for 11 months, gradually becoming worse.
And now after 2 months of it having gone away, it has returned again. This time it happened much quicker, starting on the right lower eye, then moved to the left.  The right under eye is very red, sore and dry.  It feels so rough to touch.  I have not worn make up today and have only applied vaseline and aqeous cream.

I haven't changed any toileteries or make up in the last 2 months.  I am not sure what it could be?  I don't think it is eczema, but believe it could be an allergic reaction to something.  I can't seem to work out what it could be?  Could it be an allergic reaction to something i am using around the eye or a food product?  Please help me.

Thanks
Jezabella

Also I have better luck managing the skin scaling problem by using distilled water instead of tap water (which has chlorine) when washing my face. The chlorine seems to dry and aggravate.
I also wash my hands frequently because I have a cat that I pet and I think that the dander may be a cause or a trigger.
If I scratch my cat, I wash my hands before applying makeup, etc. I'm left handed so I use my right hand to scratch the cat. Use left hand to apply lotion, makeup to face, etc. :0)
Cold weather and winds, tears and sweat seem to aggravate.
If I apply a lotion and stinging occurs, if I don't remove it right away, scaling is triggered.
I use hydrocortizone cream with aquaphor only if there is itching.
Hope this also helps.

I have had same problem for over 5 years. I also tried eliminating everything.
I use Aquaphor and Nivea and I wear DHC Concentrated Eye Cream as a base before makeup. I try to stay away from eyeshadows. I get away with using eye concealer, eyeliner and mascara.

I had same problem as in first post.  I stopped wearing make up and problem didn't clear up.  I then stopped using anything on my face at all and it got better.  Then when my skin felt dry one day I used Aveda Hydrating Lotion, which I had used for 8 years' and BANG that was it.

I have been in touch with Aveda and they confirm formula has changed.

Hope this may help others here.

I was also suffering from a similar problem recently - a red blotchy place under my left eye, with a dry scaly patch in it. Not itchy as many are here... but I thought I would post my solution in case it could be of help to any of you. My problem arose while we were back in the United States for a couple of months. Now we have returned to Costa Rica. I went to the local Macrobiotica (organic) store and in my broken Spanish explained my problem. The young woman offered me a few options at my request, most of which I had seen on this forum: aloe vera, shea butter, etc. But then she brought out a product called Gel Krisme Refrescante which she seemed to recommend highly, so that's what I bought. Within two days, the red spot was greatly reduced and the scaly patch was completely gone. One of the active ingredients is, oddly enough, extract of carrots (zanahoria)! And the gel is quite orange in color... other ingredients are unfamilar to me (perhaps due to the Spanish): carbopol, thietanolamina, sabila fresca, berengena. If you can find something with these ingredients, perhaps it will help some of you too. Good luck! I'm thrilled with my results...
