Extreme pain in shoulder

Extreme pain in shoulder

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a couple of years ago.I have tried a number of things to help ne through with it, physiotherapy, acupuncture, laser treatments and a number of medications, most of which my system has not been able to tolerate. I am presently on Tramacet which I can tolerate but does not help much.  Somehow, on top of the Fibromyalgia, I've developed severe pain in my right shoulder which causes me pain 24/7 and has limited me to do just about anything needing 2 hands. This pain has been there for over a year and my Rheumatologist has been giving me cortisone injections, 5 over the last 15 months. I've had x-rays and an MRI in which the dignosis reads: Calcific tendinosis of the distal supraspinatus tendon with low grade bursal surface fraying".
I've been told there should not be calcium in the tendons and this is why I have such pain.
I really didn't want another one but I had another cortisone shot yesterday and last night the pain in my shoulder intensified so much I could not even lift my hand to my face. I had to sit up in bed all night as I can't lay down and today my shoulder is literally frozen with pain. I can't even lift my arm away from my body to put a pillow under my arm or even lift my hand to my face to eat. The intense pain is where my existing pain is but magnified times ten. I've never had this kind of reaction before and have been injected in the same spot other times with minimal discomfort.  I am concerned that the injection may have damaged something this time.  I don't know how much more intense this pain can get as I can't hang my arm dowm or lift it from my side and there is no sign of relief at all.  I've been icing it and taking Ibuprofen with no results. Can cotrisone cause more damage to an existing pain area permanantly?  Is this reaction normal and what do I do if I have this intense pain all the time? This has taken forever to type as i'm doing it with one hand. Hope you can help.
thanks,Michelle

It's important to have the calcific tendonitis treated so your shoulder doesn't get so stiff as to result in frozen shoulder like my mother-in-law.  Frequent cortisone injections can be damaging, and weaken a tendon.

Physical therapy and help from a physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation physician) can help.
