Pain!?

Hello! I'm usually a lurker and appreciate all of the valuable info offered. I was diagnosed with Lupus 6 years ago, Behcet's a year ago and most recently Peripheral Neuropathy. Presently, I'm in a pretty bad Behcet's flare. I'm experiencing extreme burning pain in my mouth, throat and especially genitals. In addition to all of my regular meds, I was prescribed and started using a compounded med last night to numb the genital area to stop the burning. It is a combination of Zidocaine 5%, Tetracaine 14%, and Benzocaine 20% The pharmacist commented it would definitely numb the area it was applied to. When applied, it set me on fire even more and increased the nausea from the pain! I thought maybe it would just burn a few minutes until the numbing set in. It didn't, the area was very numb but still burning intensely! Any ideas how that could be and ANY suggestions that I might try for relief would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Right now the only relief I can get is from ice packs. I gave in last night and started prednisone.

Thanks for your sympathy and good suggestions. I definitely will not use the cream again, I can't even stand the thought of it! I already take zyrtec everyday, so maybe that would help if it's an allergic reaction. I'm sorry to hear that you suffer with Lupus. I hope you are having a good day, God bless you!

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time.  I, too, have lupus, but do not have Bechet's.

The only thing I can think of that might have caused this intense burning is perhaps you are allergic to one of the compounds in the cream.  The other thinking I had is that perhaps because you are already sore (and I"m presuming have at least a couple of OPEN sores), that when the cream hit those areas, it caused the burning (similar to the old bengay in the jock strap thing only MUCH worse).

At any rate, I would definitely suggest NOT using the cream again until you've at least talked to the presribing doctor and see if he/she thinks it might have been an allergic reaction.

If you're able to take it, you may also consider trying an over the counter allergy med such as benadryl or claritan to see if it helps at all - it might if it is in fact an allergic reaction.

Best of luck - I hope you get some relief soon.
