Unexplained joint pain

I am a type two diabetic. In the past 2 months my blood sugar levels shot up for the first time in years. My endocrinologist was concerned about either becoming immune to my medicines or my pancreas failing. The addition of a new medication seems to be working. Victoza.  I am on my third pen.

This week I have experienced an unusual weight gain. 14 pounds in 7 days. Mid week I began having pain in my wrists. Numbness and tingling were pretty bad. I have carpal tunnel so I attributed it to that and fluid retention. Now my ankles and feet are hurting so badly I can barely walk. One foot is slightly swollen and it is the more painful.

I have just taken a diuretic to see if that reduces edema.

Ideas?

Sherri90049, I have had my thyroid checked by my endocrinologist. So far all is normal.

carolanivey, I took two lasix after posting my question. I was down 5 pounds in 2 hours.  Definitely on the right track. I don't normally take lasix. It is my rx but I've taken one in all the years I've had it. The doctor gave it to me just in case I needed it.

Feeling better today but any shoes with a heel cause pain.

I believe I am going to see my general practitioner with questions because I think something nondiabetic related is going on.

Thank you for your answers.

My Dad was a type 2 diabetic, along with myriad other health problems, and he weighed himself every morning - sudden weight gain was a signal that his kidneys weren't functioning properly, and he needed up his diuretic.

I would call your specialist about the quick weight gain, and maybe check with the pharmacist to see if your new medication could be causing it.

Seems to me it could go one of two ways. Either the lupus/rheumatoid arthritis direction, or the hypothyroid direction. Both are tricky to diagnose sometimes. I have lupus and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis w/hypothyroidism. And your symptoms sound similar to mine. (It could totally be something else, of course!) But I would ask to have an ANA test done and a full thyroid panel. And watch out for the TSH test results. They should be between 1.0 & 2.0, but most labs still use the old normal ranges of 0.5-4.5. Anything over 2.0 is usually the beginning of hypothyroidism and frequently includes symptoms similar to yours. I'm just throwing out possibilities, though. And I am definitely not a doctor. Good luck! Hope you feel better soon! Please keep us posted!
